The Israel Defense Forces said it has killed Tareq Anwar Khamis Ra’i, whom it identified as a commander in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement.
According to the IDF, Ra’i was involved in the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and infiltrated Kibbutz Be’eri, where the military says he participated in the abduction of an Israeli civilian.
The IDF also accused him of continuing to plan and advance attacks against Israeli troops and civilians in the period since the October 7 assault.
The military did not provide further details about the circumstances or location of the operation that it said resulted in Ra’i’s death.
IDF Links Commander to October 7 Abduction
The Israeli military said Ra’i’s role during the October 7 attack extended beyond taking part in the assault itself.
According to the IDF, the Islamic Jihad operative entered Kibbutz Be’eri during the attack and was involved in the abduction of an Israeli civilian.
The accusation places Ra’i among Palestinian militants whom Israel says were directly involved in the mass assault that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.
The claims were made by the IDF and have not been independently verified in the information released.
Military Reports New Ceasefire Incident
The announcement came alongside a separate statement from the IDF concerning an alleged violation of the ceasefire in northern Gaza.
The Israeli military said a Hamas explosive device detonated in the area of the so-called Yellow Line, while militants also fired toward the same area.
No Israeli soldiers were reported injured in the incident.
IDF Says It Responded to Immediate Threat
The IDF said its forces responded by striking targets in the Yellow Line area following the explosion and reported gunfire.
The military described the action as a response to what it characterized as an immediate threat.
At the same time, the IDF said it would continue operating in accordance with the ceasefire agreement.
The statement reflects the continuing tension surrounding the truce, with Israeli forces and Hamas maintaining competing claims over incidents occurring around the designated ceasefire areas.
Ceasefire Remains Under Pressure
The latest reports illustrate the difficulty of maintaining the ceasefire while Israeli forces and Palestinian militants remain active in close proximity.
Israel has repeatedly said it will respond to threats against its troops and civilians, while Hamas has accused Israel of violating agreements and continuing military operations in Gaza.
The IDF’s latest statements did not provide additional information about the scale of damage from the northern Gaza incident or identify the specific targets struck in response.
The competing claims could further complicate efforts to maintain the ceasefire and prevent renewed escalation.
