Durban’s International Convention Centre (ICC) will undergo extensive infrastructure improvements after the eThekwini Municipality approved an investment of R11.3 million to prepare the venue for one of Southern Africa’s biggest diplomatic gatherings.
The upgrades come as the city readies itself to host the 46th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit, where heads of state, government officials, business executives and regional partners are expected to converge in August.
Durban Already Hosting Key SADC Activities
The ICC is currently welcoming delegates attending SADC Industrialisation Week, which runs until 31 July.
The event serves as a precursor to the summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled to take place between 3 and 18 August.
Among the expected attendees is South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, alongside leaders from across the 16-member regional bloc.
Municipality Redirects Budget to Prepare Venue
To ensure the convention centre is ready for the high-profile event, the eThekwini Municipality said it reprioritised projects within its 2026/27 capital budget to finance critical maintenance and infrastructure improvements.
Although earlier reports suggested the funding would focus mainly on upgrading restroom facilities, municipal officials clarified that the project covers a much broader range of essential improvements aimed at modernising the venue.
Building Systems to Receive Major Overhaul
A significant portion of the funding will be used to replace the ICC’s ageing Building Management System (BMS), with approximately R6 million allocated to the project.
The municipality also plans to spend R2 million on upgrading emergency door mechanisms located in public areas of the venue, improving both safety and operational efficiency.
An additional R3.3 million has been earmarked for refurbishing the movable wall systems that allow conference spaces to be reconfigured for different events.
Additional Infrastructure Improvements Planned
Beyond the headline projects, the municipality confirmed that the investment will also cover improvements to the convention centre’s air-conditioning systems and other supporting infrastructure considered necessary to meet international standards for the upcoming summit.
Officials believe the upgrades will ensure the ICC remains capable of hosting large-scale international meetings while improving the overall experience for delegates and visitors.

City leaders say the project extends beyond preparations for a single diplomatic event.
The municipality views the Durban ICC as one of its most valuable strategic assets and believes the improvements will strengthen its ability to compete for future international conferences, exhibitions and business events.
