Italy’s stunning Amalfi Coast has been overwhelmed by a surge of summer visitors, with packed beaches, crowded harbours and long queues becoming a daily sight during the peak holiday season.
The popularity of destinations such as Positano has brought millions of tourists eager to experience the region’s famous coastline, but the influx has also highlighted growing concerns about overcrowding and safety.
A dramatic video circulating online has captured the dangers that can arise when heavy tourist traffic combines with unpredictable weather conditions.
Terrifying Ferry Docking Attempt Leaves Passengers Screaming in Positano
A British holidaymaker filmed the frightening moment a passenger ferry struggled to dock at Positano’s harbour as strong winds and rough waves repeatedly pushed the vessel into the pier.
The footage shows the crowded ferry approaching the dock with its boarding platform already lowered while crew members attempted to guide it safely into position.
However, powerful waves made the manoeuvre extremely difficult.
The boat was lifted and thrown back towards the pier several times, causing the boarding steps to slam against the structure.
Passengers could be heard shouting, swearing and crying out in fear as the vessel was battered by the conditions.
Crowded Harbour Turns Into Scene of Panic During Stormy Conditions
As the ferry struggled to secure its position, waves crashed over the harbour walls and flooded parts of the busy pier.
Tourists waiting to board or leave the vessel were forced to move away from the edge as water surged across the area.
Unable to safely keep the ferry alongside the dock, the crew eventually lifted the boarding ladder and moved away from the harbour to avoid further damage.
After several more attempts, the ferry finally managed to dock successfully, and authorities confirmed that no passengers were injured.
Despite the safe outcome, the frightening incident left many travellers shaken.
Passenger Reveals Ferry Experience Was Worse Than Viral Footage Showed
One woman who said she was among those onboard the ferry commented on the viral video, claiming the reality inside the vessel was far more terrifying than what viewers saw online.
“I was there. But know that being on the boat was 100 times worse than what the video shows,” she wrote.
Her comments have renewed debate about safety measures at popular coastal destinations where narrow harbours, large crowds and changing weather conditions can create dangerous situations.
Amalfi Coast Struggles With Pressure From Mass Tourism
The ferry incident comes as the Amalfi Coast continues to face challenges caused by record numbers of visitors during the summer season.
Images from the area show crowded streets, packed beaches and long lines of tourists trying to access some of the region’s most famous locations.
While tourism remains a vital part of the local economy, residents and officials have increasingly raised concerns about managing the overwhelming number of visitors during the busiest months.
The combination of overcrowding and extreme weather has made transportation around the coastline more complicated, particularly for ferries and smaller passenger boats.
Similar Sea Disaster in Maldives Sparked Passenger Panic
The Positano incident follows another frightening maritime event involving tourists overseas, when a packed speedboat carrying holidaymakers began sinking in rough waters near the Maldives.
The vessel was transporting 45 passengers and three crew members from Dhigurah Island to Malé when it encountered severe conditions.
Passenger Gao, a 27-year-old diver, said the journey became dangerous after a large wave struck the boat and appeared to damage the engine less than an hour after departure.
Passengers Jumped Into Water as Sinking Boat Filled With Sea Water
According to Gao, panic quickly spread among passengers as the speedboat began tilting and water entered the cabin.
Some travellers reportedly feared they would become trapped and jumped into the sea while others struggled to put on their life jackets.
Gao, who lives in Australia and has diving experience, said she helped passengers stay together and assisted others with their safety equipment.
“Everyone was actually very panicked, especially some foreign tourists because the captain did not give any instructions,” she said.
The vessel sank within minutes after all passengers had evacuated, with rescue teams arriving to assist those stranded in the water.
Rough Seas Raise Safety Questions for Tourist Boat Operators
The Maldives incident also highlighted the risks faced by tourist boats operating in difficult weather conditions.
Gao said the boat left at around 7am and was expected to complete the journey to Malé within an hour and a half.
She explained that the sea was already rough when the journey began and that a powerful wave struck the cabin at approximately 7.40am.
Around half an hour later, the boat started tilting sharply as water entered the passenger area.
Within minutes, the situation became critical, with the water level rising close to the windows before passengers were forced to abandon the vessel.
Both incidents have renewed attention on the importance of safety precautions as millions of travellers continue to explore popular coastal destinations around the world.
