SA Rugby is preparing a uniquely South African response to the famous All Blacks haka as New Zealand gets ready for its long-awaited tour of the country.
Rather than leaving the traditional pre-match challenge unanswered, local organizers have introduced a creative initiative that will see selected school groups perform their own war cries before four provincial fixtures, adding a distinctive South African touch to one of rugby’s greatest rivalries.
Historic Tour Revives a Longstanding Tradition
The arrival of the All Blacks marks the return of full-scale touring between South Africa and New Zealand after a 30-year absence, reigniting one of the sport’s most celebrated traditions.
The visitors begin their eight-match journey against the Stormers in Cape Town on August 7 before taking on the Sharks and Bulls.
The tour will then move into the first Test at Ellis Park on August 22, followed by a midweek clash against the Lions and three additional Tests, with the final encounter scheduled to be played in Baltimore, United States.
School Competition Creates a Proud Local Response
To make the provincial matches even more memorable, SA Rugby launched a nationwide competition inviting schools to submit their own traditional war cries.
After receiving numerous entries from across the country, four winning schools have been selected.
Each school will perform its unique chant immediately after the All Blacks deliver the haka during one of the four franchise fixtures.
The initiative is designed to celebrate South African culture while embracing the respect and tradition that surrounds the haka rather than attempting to overshadow it.
Provincial Teams Chasing a Rare Achievement
Beyond the pre-match ceremonies, South Africa’s United Rugby Championship franchises will have another major motivation.
No South African provincial side has defeated the All Blacks on home soil since the 1976 tour, making this year’s matches an opportunity to end a drought stretching nearly five decades.
New Zealand enjoyed an unbeaten provincial campaign during its 1996 visit, winning three matches and drawing one before securing a 2-1 Test series victory—their first-ever series win in South Africa.
