A demonstration by supporters of former President Donald Trump in Washington, DC ended in violence on Saturday night as confrontations between far-right activists and anti-fascist counter-protesters left several people injured and prompted dozens of arrests.
Authorities said the unrest broke out after a day of largely peaceful protests challenging the outcome of the U.S. presidential election.
Stabbings and Arrests Reported as Tensions Escalate
According to police and emergency officials, four people were hospitalized after suffering stab wounds during the clashes, while officers arrested 23 individuals as they worked to restore order.
Violence erupted after nightfall as crowds leaving the demonstrations encountered opposing groups in different parts of the city.
What had been peaceful gatherings earlier in the day quickly gave way to isolated street fights and confrontations.
Police responded by deploying pepper spray in an effort to separate the opposing sides, although sporadic skirmishes continued even after officers intervened.
Proud Boys Among Groups at the Demonstration
Members of the Proud Boys, a far-right organization, were among those participating in the protests near the Trump International Hotel.
Roughly 200 members of the group attended the event, many wearing military-style clothing and protective gear.
During the demonstrations, they exchanged insults with anti-fascist activists and were seen burning Black Lives Matter flags.
Law enforcement officers maintained a visible presence throughout the day and initially succeeded in preventing direct confrontations between the rival groups before violence later broke out.
Demonstrators Continue Claims Over Election Results
The Washington rally centered on allegations from Trump supporters that the November 3 presidential election had been affected by widespread fraud.
Those claims have repeatedly been rejected by election officials, while numerous legal challenges filed by Trump’s campaign failed to overturn certified results.
More than 50 rulings by state and federal courts upheld Joe Biden’s victory, and shortly before the protests, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a lawsuit backed by Trump that sought to invalidate election results in several battleground states.
Similar Protests Held Across Key States
Demonstrations were not limited to the nation’s capital.
Supporters of the former president also gathered in several states where his campaign had attempted to challenge vote counts, including Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Arizona.
The events formed part of a broader effort by Trump’s supporters to continue contesting the election outcome despite repeated court decisions affirming the results.
Mike Flynn Urges Supporters to Stay Active
Retired Army General Michael Flynn, who previously served as Trump’s national security adviser, addressed demonstrators outside the U.S. Supreme Court.
During his remarks, Flynn encouraged supporters to return to their home states and continue pressing officials over the election.
Drawing on the biblical story of Jericho, he compared the protesters’ actions to breaching the city’s walls, urging them to remain determined.
Some participants also blew shofars, traditional ram’s horns used in Jewish religious ceremonies, describing the act as a symbolic stand against what they called corruption.
Trump Greets Supporters From Marine One
President Trump acknowledged the demonstrators while traveling aboard Marine One en route to the annual Army-Navy football game.
The helicopter flew over crowds gathered in Washington, prompting cheers from many supporters below.
Health officials also noted that relatively few participants wore face masks during the demonstrations despite rising COVID-19 infections at the time, a move that ran counter to public health guidance issued by Washington’s local government.
