Strategic Mission Systems LLC has been awarded a major U.S. Air Force contract valued at up to $984 million to provide sustainment and modernization services for the E-4B aircraft fleet.
The agreement will support critical communications systems aboard the aircraft and ensure the continued operation of one of the military’s most important airborne command and control platforms for years to come.
Officials said the contract was awarded through a sole-source acquisition process and is structured as an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity agreement.
Focus on Mission-Critical Communications Systems
Under the terms of the contract, Strategic Mission Systems will provide communication support services for E-4B mission systems, helping maintain and enhance the aircraft’s operational capabilities.
The E-4B aircraft serves as a highly specialized airborne command post designed to support national leadership and military commanders during emergencies, including situations that could disrupt traditional ground-based communications networks.
Ensuring the reliability of its communication infrastructure remains a top priority for defense planners.
Work Scheduled Through 2037
The long-term contract is expected to continue through June 2037, providing more than a decade of support, maintenance, and modernization efforts.
The extended timeline reflects the Air Force’s commitment to preserving and upgrading the aircraft’s capabilities as operational requirements evolve and new technologies become available.
Defense officials view continuous modernization as essential to maintaining mission readiness and ensuring the platform remains effective in future operating environments.
Multiple Locations Will Support the Program
Contract work will be carried out across several locations in the United States.
Primary activities will take place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, with additional work scheduled in San Antonio, Texas, and at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.
The multi-site approach will allow specialized teams to contribute to different aspects of the sustainment and modernization program while supporting the aircraft’s operational needs.
Initial Funding Released for Program Launch
At the time of the contract award, the Air Force obligated approximately $24.9 million in fiscal year 2026 operations and maintenance funding to begin work under the agreement.
Additional funding may be issued over the life of the contract as individual task orders are awarded and program requirements continue to develop.
E-4B Fleet Remains Vital to National Defense
The E-4B aircraft is widely recognized as a key component of the United States’ strategic command and control infrastructure.
Designed to operate during national emergencies, the aircraft provides senior government and military leaders with a survivable communications platform capable of supporting command functions under extreme circumstances.
Maintaining the fleet’s technological edge is considered essential to ensuring continuity of operations and preserving command capabilities during crises.
Air Force Continues Investment in Strategic Readiness
The contract underscores the military’s ongoing investment in systems that support national security and strategic preparedness.
By funding sustainment and modernization efforts for the E-4B fleet, the Air Force aims to keep the aircraft mission-ready while enhancing its ability to meet future operational demands.
The agreement also highlights the continued importance of advanced communications capabilities as military planners adapt to an increasingly complex global security environment.
