Ukraine Claims Drone Strikes Hit Moscow Oil Refinery in Kapotnya, Russia as Fire Erupts and Tensions Explode Over Retaliatory Attacks in Escalating War

A drone attack struck a major oil refinery located just outside Moscow on Tuesday, igniting a fire and causing visible damage, according to Russian authorities.

Ukrainian officials later said the strike was part of what they described as retaliation for continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory.

The incident marks another escalation in cross-border drone warfare between the two countries, coming amid intensified aerial assaults reported on both sides.

Moscow Reports Large-Scale Drone Activity Over Capital

Moscow officials said the refinery strike occurred during a broader wave of drone activity targeting the Russian capital.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that air defence systems intercepted around 60 drones aimed at the city over the course of Tuesday.

He confirmed that one of the drones reached an industrial facility and damaged the refinery, although no casualties were reported.

The statement was published via Russia’s state communication platform.

Russian state media described the overnight wave of drone activity as one of the most significant targeting Moscow so far this year.

Fire Breaks Out at Gazprom-Linked Refinery Site

The affected facility is located in the Kapotnya district in southeastern Moscow, an area where traffic was temporarily restricted following the incident.

The refinery is linked to energy giant Gazprom, one of Russia’s most important state-affiliated companies.

Local authorities moved quickly to secure the area as emergency crews responded to the fire caused by the drone impact.

Details about the scale of structural damage have not yet been fully disclosed.

Ukraine Claims Responsibility and Frames Strike as Retaliation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Kyiv’s involvement, stating that the refinery strike occurred at a distance of approximately 500 kilometres from Ukraine’s border, highlighting the reach of Ukrainian long-range drone capabilities.

He also released footage appearing to show a drone approaching a dense urban-industrial zone before striking near a refinery chimney, followed by an explosion and rising smoke.

Zelensky described the attack as a “just response” to Russian military actions, adding that ongoing strikes by Moscow have prolonged the war and intensified the need for countermeasures.

Escalation Follows Heavy Russian Barrage on Ukraine

The Moscow-area strike came just one day after Ukraine reported one of the largest aerial attacks launched by Russia in recent months.

According to Ukrainian officials, more than 600 drones and 70 missiles were fired across the country, killing at least 11 people.

Among the reported damage was a UNESCO-listed Orthodox monastery in Kyiv, which sustained destruction during the bombardment.

Energy Infrastructure Increasingly Targeted in the Conflict

In recent months, Ukraine has increasingly focused its strikes on Russian oil-processing facilities and export infrastructure.

The strategy is widely seen as an attempt to disrupt energy revenues that fund Moscow’s war effort.

Meanwhile, Russia has continued its near-daily drone and missile attacks across Ukraine since the start of its full-scale invasion in 2022, further intensifying the cycle of retaliation that now regularly reaches deep into both countries’ territories.
