A security incident near President Donald Trump’s California golf club has prompted an ongoing federal investigation after authorities arrested a man allegedly carrying weapons and ammunition just days before the president was due to attend a high-profile Republican fundraising event.

Despite the alarming circumstances, Trump dismissed concerns, insisting the incident only reinforced his belief that he remains a significant political figure.

Trump Says Threats Come With Being a “Consequential” President

Speaking to Fox News, Trump responded to questions about the arrest by suggesting that presidents who have a major impact on the country often become targets.

He said the situation offered him some comfort because, in his view, only “consequential presidents” attract such threats.

Trump then shifted the conversation toward what he described as the achievements of his administration, echoing comments he made after another armed individual was detained near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner earlier this year.

Suspicious Activity Reported Before Planned Fundraiser

The arrest took place on Sunday after Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies spotted 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele near Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Investigators said Taele had been photographing the property and monitoring security operations around the golf course ahead of Trump’s scheduled Republican National Committee fundraising dinner on Tuesday.

Deputies searched him and reportedly discovered a loaded firearm magazine in his pocket.

A subsequent search of his vehicle allegedly uncovered a loaded handgun along with additional ammunition.

Search of Home Uncovers More Weapons

Authorities later executed a search warrant at Taele’s residence in Downey, California, where investigators said they recovered a larger cache of weapons.

According to officials, the search produced an illegally modified AR-style rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines and additional ammunition.

Investigators also reported finding notebooks containing what they described as concerning statements, along with two radio communication devices.

Federal Investigation Continues

Taele has been arrested on allegations including carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition, including hollow-point rounds.

First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli said law enforcement agencies acted before Trump’s arrival, preventing what could have become a dangerous situation.

He noted that investigators are still working to determine Taele’s motives and emphasized that the investigation remains active.

Officials also stressed that there is currently no credible threat to the surrounding community.

Additional Legal Troubles Mount

Beyond the federal case, Taele is also facing criminal proceedings in Los Angeles Superior Court related to the same incident.

Authorities confirmed he is additionally being investigated over a separate robbery case in nearby El Segundo.

If convicted on the federal charges, prosecutors said he could face a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

A law enforcement source told the New York Post that Taele, who reportedly identified himself as a Marine Corps veteran, had been seen near the golf course several times over the previous two months.

Investigators have not determined whether he knew Trump would be visiting the property this week.

Security Concerns Follow Trump Into California

Trump’s California stop forms part of a broader West Coast trip that also includes Nevada, where he is expected to campaign on issues including the economy, immigration and crime while helping Republicans ahead of the November congressional elections.

The president continues to travel under heightened security following multiple threats in recent years. Among the most notable was the shooting at a Pennsylvania campaign rally during the 2024 election season.

In 2025, another man was convicted over an attempted assassination plot at Trump’s Florida golf club, while an armed suspect was more recently arrested after attempting to enter the White House Correspondents’ Dinner while Trump was attending.

Political Battle With Gavin Newsom Set to Continue

Trump’s visit is also expected to intensify his long-running political feud with California Governor Gavin Newsom.

White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said the president intends to highlight what she described as the contrast between his policy agenda and Democratic leadership in California, particularly on economic issues.

Newsom responded on social media by promoting California’s planned increase in the state minimum wage to $17.40 an hour next year.

He criticized Trump and Republican lawmakers for continuing to support the federal minimum wage of $7.25, arguing that workers deserve significantly higher pay.
