Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave of absence after receiving approval from President Bola Tinubu, marking the first time he has taken official leave since the current administration assumed office on May 29, 2023.
The leave, which began on Thursday, is expected to conclude around August 20, when the Vice President will resume his official duties.
Leave Focused on Learning and Strategic Preparation
According to a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, the period away from official engagements will be dedicated to study, reflection, and intellectual development.
The presidency explained that the break is intended to help Shettima strengthen his leadership capacity while preparing for the next phase of the Federal Government’s policy implementation under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Officials said the Vice President plans to use the opportunity to assess ongoing government programmes, broaden his understanding of emerging national and international policy issues, and refine strategies that will support future decision-making.
Active Role in Key Government Priorities
Since taking office alongside President Tinubu, Shettima has played a central role in coordinating several major government initiatives across different sectors.
The Office of the Vice President noted that his responsibilities have included oversight of programmes focused on economic growth, food security, humanitarian interventions, digital innovation, employment generation, and regional partnerships.
His office described him as remaining consistently engaged in advancing the administration’s development objectives while supporting intergovernmental coordination.
Leadership of the National Economic Council
One of Shettima’s most prominent responsibilities has been chairing the National Economic Council, a body that brings together Nigeria’s 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and other senior public officials.
The council serves as a key platform for discussions on economic policies, fiscal strategies, and initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians.
Through this role, the Vice President has been involved in shaping policies designed to address economic challenges and support national development.
Representing Nigeria on the Global Stage
Beyond his domestic responsibilities, Shettima has frequently represented President Tinubu at major international and regional events.
He attended several high-level meetings, including the G20 and African Union-European Union summits last November, standing in for the President during periods when Tinubu chose to remain in Nigeria to oversee security concerns following kidnapping incidents in Papiri, Niger State, and Eruku in Kwara State.
These diplomatic engagements formed part of Nigeria’s efforts to maintain active participation in global discussions on economic cooperation, security, and development.
Presidency Reaffirms Confidence in Vice President
The Presidency said Shettima remains committed to the principles of loyalty, public service, and dedication that have defined his role since the administration began.
Officials added that his temporary leave is not expected to affect government operations and described it as an opportunity for renewal before he returns to continue supporting President Tinubu’s vision of building a more secure, productive, and prosperous Nigeria.
Shettima is scheduled to resume official duties at the end of the two-week leave, on or around August 20, 2026.
