The federal government has announced new funding to help expand critical infrastructure in the Rural Municipality of Kinkora, Prince Edward Island, paving the way for more housing and supporting the area’s growing population.

The investment, valued at more than $620,000, will be provided through the Direct Delivery stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF).

The funding was announced by Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Heath MacDonald, who said the project is part of Canada’s broader effort to strengthen communities through modern infrastructure.

Upgrading Essential Water Services

The funding will be directed toward the Johnston subdivision infrastructure expansion project, which focuses on improving wastewater and stormwater systems needed for future residential development.

Construction plans include approximately 1.5 kilometres of new sewer mains, more than 700 metres of stormwater mains, 50 manholes, 20 catch basins, and two stormwater detention ponds.

These new facilities will be connected to Kinkora’s existing infrastructure network to improve service capacity.

New Infrastructure to Unlock Housing Development

Once the upgrades are complete, the expanded infrastructure will make it possible to develop 29 new housing lots, creating space for up to 78 residential units.

The planned housing mix is designed to accommodate a range of residents and includes single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes, a 10-unit seniors housing complex, and three apartment buildings containing eight units each.

The project is expected to increase housing availability while encouraging higher-density development within the municipality.

Supporting a Growing Community

Local officials expect the infrastructure improvements to open land that was previously unsuitable for development, creating new opportunities to address housing demand as Kinkora continues to grow.

By expanding essential municipal services, the project aims to support long-term residential growth while ensuring the community has the infrastructure needed to accommodate future development.

Part of a Nationwide Infrastructure Strategy

The investment forms part of the federal government’s Build Communities Strong Fund, a nationwide initiative that is committing $51 billion to infrastructure projects across Canada.

The program supports a broad range of projects, including housing, transportation, education, healthcare, sports facilities, climate adaptation, and economic development.

Through investments like the Kinkora expansion, the federal government says it is helping communities build resilient infrastructure while increasing the supply of housing for current and future generations.
