Technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, who died alongside his wife, two young children and five other people in a Florida plane crash, previously spoke about how flying on private jets became part of his lifestyle and personal identity.
The 45-year-old founder and CEO of Retention.com was among nine people killed when a Learjet 60 crashed near West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday.
In an undated podcast interview that has resurfaced online following his death, Robinson described how he was introduced to private aviation while working at Lehman Brothers in New York City in the early 2000s.
He recalled being surrounded by wealthy Wall Street colleagues and hedge fund executives who regularly travelled on private aircraft. Initially, he believed the experience was beyond his financial reach.
CEO Described the Status Associated With Private Flights
Robinson explained that some of his wealthy friends treated private aviation as a status symbol, with spontaneous trips becoming part of their social lives.
He recalled occasions when friends would suggest travelling to destinations such as Las Vegas the following morning using a private jet.
The entrepreneur said he eventually discovered that he could access private flights for a few thousand dollars monthly, allowing him to travel from New York to destinations including Miami and Chicago.
At the time, he was single and travelled frequently.
He described the experience as a revelation, saying he had realised that private aviation was also accessible to him.
Robinson acknowledged that the status associated with flying privately became important to his identity.
The interview clip was shared by social media account Pulcys on November 3, attracting widespread attention following the fatal accident.
Further details about the podcast programme and the date of the original recording have not been established.
Robinson and His Family Were Travelling to the Bahamas
Robinson was travelling with his wife, Helen Sharp, 40, and their children, Emma, four, and Charlie, two, when the aircraft crashed in Greenacres, Florida.
The family had departed from their home in Austin, Texas, and were heading to the Bahamas to celebrate Robinson’s birthday, according to TMZ.
Also aboard the aircraft were the family’s friends Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr, their nanny Anita Maria Cetina, and two pilots.
The Learjet 60 crashed into an intersection on Sunday afternoon, producing a large fireball and leaving a massive crater in the road.
The impact also damaged nearby infrastructure.
Cockpit Audio Captured Pilots Reporting Emergency
Distressing cockpit recordings captured the moments in which the aircraft’s crew communicated the emergency to air traffic control.
The 55-year-old pilot, Jeffrey Gregory, could be heard reciting the Lord’s Prayer as the aircraft descended rapidly.
His co-pilot, 20-year-old Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, warned air traffic control that the jet was losing altitude at approximately 20,000 feet per minute and was heading towards the ground.
She also reported that the aircraft had banked at an angle of 60 degrees as its altitude continued to change.
The Daily Mail said it had chosen not to publish the final seconds of the recording because of the distressing nature of the audio.
Filgueiras had also reportedly exchanged messages with her boyfriend, who was a fellow pilot, about encountering heavy weather shortly before the crash.
Investigators Examine Severe Weather as Possible Cause
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
At a press conference on Monday, investigators identified severe weather as a significant factor being examined.
They also disclosed that part of the aircraft appeared to have separated before it struck the ground.
Officials said the pilots had requested permission to climb another 2,000 feet after encountering a thunderstorm shortly before the aircraft went down.
Some aviation experts have suggested that the aircraft may have encountered what pilots describe as ‘coffin corner’ while attempting to climb above two storm systems.
The term refers to the narrow margin between an aircraft’s minimum safe flying speed and maximum operating speed at high altitude.
Exceeding either limit can result in a stall or loss of control.
Investigators have yet to establish the precise sequence of events that led to the aircraft’s descent and eventual impact.
Families Release Joint Tribute to the Victims
The victims’ families issued a joint statement remembering those who died in the crash, including Robinson, his wife and their two children.
The statement described Adam and Helen as devoted parents and said Emma and Charlie were the centre of their lives.
It also paid tribute to the couple’s relationship, describing them as a love affair that would last forever.
The statement added that the couple’s warmth, generosity and ability to make others feel welcome had touched many lives.
Reed and Fehr were remembered as joyful and adventurous people who loved their friends deeply and were committed to the lives they were building together.
Cetina, who cared for Emma and Charlie, was described as someone who had become part of the family through her tenderness and devotion.
The families said her legacy would be one of unconditional love and dedication.
Robinson and Sharp Built Careers in Business and Creative Industries
Robinson was an entrepreneur who founded the technology company Retention.com and frequently discussed his experiences building successful start-ups.
Before establishing his technology businesses, he reportedly spent 10 years working on Wall Street.
He later launched an artificial intelligence start-up called GetEmail.
His wife, Helen Sharp, operated a communications company named Influential PR and owned Helen Sharp Ceramics, a pottery studio based in Aspen.
Sharp’s family also released a separate statement expressing their grief over her death.
The statement described her as deeply loved and said the number of people mourning her and Robinson reflected how many lives the couple had touched.
Jeffrey Gregory, who lived in Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, and co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras were also identified among those killed in the crash.
