Alison Southgate, the wife of former England manager Sir Gareth Southgate, has emerged as an unexpected social media favourite after joining her daughter Mia in a series of fashion videos.

The 59-year-old, who has largely stayed out of the public eye throughout her husband’s football career, has attracted attention for her styling skills, appearing alongside Mia, 25, in Instagram content that has generated hundreds of thousands of views.

Alison has become a central figure in Mia’s popular ‘Letting My Mum Style Me’ series, where she selects outfits for her daughter for different occasions, including date nights, spring outings and glamorous holidays.

Her fashion choices have received widespread praise from Mia’s followers, with many commenting on her sense of style and describing her looks as iconic.

Mother-Daughter Duo Attract Millions of Views

The pair have also experimented with videos in which they style identical clothing pieces in different ways.

One such clip, which attracted more than 3.6 million views, featured Alison and Mia wearing the same brown blazer from ME+EM but creating two distinct outfits.

Their striking physical resemblance also caught the attention of viewers, with several followers describing them as twins.

Mia has built an audience of more than 35,000 Instagram followers by sharing fashion content, personal lifestyle updates and glimpses into her family life.

Across Instagram and TikTok, her following is approaching 100,000.

Although Alison’s personal Instagram account is private, her appearances on Mia’s page have given followers an opportunity to see her fashion preferences and styling abilities.

Mia Builds Full-Time Career as Content Creator

Mia studied at the University of Edinburgh and holds a master’s degree in social anthropology.

Before pursuing social media full-time, she worked as a senior social media assistant for high-street fashion brand Mint Velvet.

She left the position approximately a year ago to concentrate on developing her content creation career.

She has since collaborated with fashion retailers and labels including Rixo, Jigsaw, Topshop, Next and Citizens of Humanity.

She also earns income through affiliate links connected to clothing featured in her posts.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Mia works on a freelance basis with Rosard, a creative marketing agency specialising in travel, hospitality and real estate brands.

She has also shared advice about building an online audience, highlighting authenticity and community engagement in a post for the agency.

Mia was previously represented by Blush Talent Management, an arm of digital fashion publication SheerLuxe, and contributed a blog post discussing items on the wish-list of a fashion content creator.

Her profile has also attracted recognition outside social media, with Tatler naming her among Britain’s most eligible singles in 2022.

Mia Shares Glimpses of the Southgate Family Lifestyle

Alongside fashion recommendations and outfit videos, Mia regularly posts photographs from her overseas holidays, including trips to Portugal, Cambodia and Mauritius.

Her content also offers occasional glimpses inside the Southgate family residence, Swinsty Hall, a Grade I-listed Elizabethan manor in Timble, North Yorkshire.

Sir Gareth purchased the property for £3.75 million after moving to Middlesbrough.

Mia also occasionally features her father and younger brother, Flynn, 20, on her social media accounts, including photographs of the former England manager enjoying pub lunches with his son.

Gareth and Alison’s Relationship Began in Croydon

Alison and Sir Gareth’s relationship dates back to the early 1990s, when the former footballer first noticed her working at a clothes shop in Croydon, close to Crystal Palace’s training ground.

Gareth, who was playing for Crystal Palace at the time, later revealed that he struggled with confidence during his early football career.

Speaking to The Guardian in 2020, he recalled feeling uncomfortable when he arrived for his first day as a trainee wearing smart clothes while his colleagues dressed casually.

He said he felt out of place among his peers, describing himself as a suburban youngster who lacked the confidence and streetwise appearance of the other players.

In his 2003 book, Woody & Nord: A Football Friendship, Gareth explained how he repeatedly visited the clothing boutique where Alison worked, pretending to browse before eventually finding the confidence to approach her.

An Italian restaurant owner in Croydon, which the pair regularly visited, also helped facilitate their relationship.

Gareth had previously been self-conscious about his appearance, particularly his prominent nose, and reportedly took around two years to ask Alison out.

When he eventually approached her, she explained that she was living with another man.

However, after learning that the relationship had ended, Gareth gave her his telephone number, and Alison called him that evening.

The couple reportedly arranged early dates in a local Tesco car park to keep their relationship private from Alison’s former boyfriend.

Alison Followed Gareth to Birmingham

Their relationship faced an important decision in 1995 when Gareth left Crystal Palace for Aston Villa.

Alison gave him an ultimatum, explaining that she would move to Birmingham with him or they would have to end their relationship.

Gareth eventually decided to make the move with her, although the decision surprised his parents, Clive and Barbara, who had only met Alison once at the time.

In his account, he recalled that his parents struggled to understand why their usually methodical son had made such a spontaneous decision.

The couple married in 1997 and went on to have two children, Mia and Flynn.

Throughout Gareth’s playing and managerial career, Alison remained a consistent source of support, including during his time in charge of the England national team and his departure from the role following the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 final defeat.

Alison Has Never Been Particularly Interested in Football

Despite being married to one of England’s most recognisable former football managers, Alison has never been particularly enthusiastic about the sport.

Her father-in-law, Clive, previously told the Mail that she did not have much interest in football, although she supported Gareth because of his career.

He explained that she occasionally attended England matches at Wembley but prioritised the children’s needs, particularly during school term time.

Gareth also discussed the separation between his professional responsibilities and family life in his 2003 book.

He explained that his children were not particularly concerned about whether his team had won or lost on a Saturday, while Alison similarly avoided becoming overly involved in football results.

He said he made a conscious effort to ensure that disappointments on the pitch did not affect the family’s evenings, adding that he usually dealt with the emotional weight of football after Alison and the children had gone to sleep.

Gareth Southgate Receives Knighthood and Thanks His Family

Gareth was recognised for his services to football in the New Year Honours and received his knighthood from Prince William during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle last June.

The former England manager described the occasion as an extraordinary privilege and said he was more emotional than he had expected.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the ceremony, he also acknowledged the importance of his family and the people who had supported him throughout his career.

He thanked his wife and children for providing him with an important foundation in life and supporting him through his professional journey.

Gareth also praised Prince William, who served as president of the Football Association during his time as England manager, for his continued support of the national team.

During his tenure, Gareth guided England to the Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 finals, as well as the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Reflecting on the knighthood, he paid tribute to the coaches, players, colleagues and family members who had contributed to his achievements.
