Alan Brazil has opened up about a serious medical ordeal that kept him away from his regular breakfast radio duties for months, revealing he underwent a liver transplant that turned critical during surgery when his heart briefly stopped.

The 66-year-old broadcaster, best known for his long-running role on talkSPORT’s Breakfast Show, returned briefly on air to reassure listeners and speak candidly about his recovery, describing the experience as life-changing and still ongoing.

Emergency Surgery and a Life-Threatening Moment on the Operating Table

During his appearance, Brazil disclosed that the transplant procedure lasted several hours and took a dangerous turn in the operating theatre when his heart stopped beating temporarily.

Despite the severity of the situation, he credited medical staff at Addenbrooke’s Hospital with saving his life, saying their intervention was crucial in bringing him through the surgery safely.

He later shared that his initial announcement about the transplant was made via Instagram, though he avoided going into detail at the time, only later opening up more fully on air.

Recovery Progress and Returning to Radio

Alan Brazil told listeners he is now “improving every day,” though recovery remains gradual.

He admitted he is still not fully back to normal, but expressed optimism about returning to his presenting role in the coming weeks.

Appearing from home alongside colleagues Gabby Agbonlahor and Ally McCoist, he joked with his co-hosts while also acknowledging ongoing struggles, including difficulty sleeping.

Despite that, his tone remained upbeat as he looked forward to getting back behind the microphone and rejoining discussions about football and major sporting events.

Years of Struggles Behind the Scenes

Brazil also reflected on the broader context of his health issues, linking them to years of heavy drinking and lifestyle choices that contributed to his condition before the transplant became necessary.

He described the past few months as “strange and difficult,” but also expressed gratitude for being alive, noting that many others in his age group and sporting circle have recently faced health challenges or loss.

He referenced well-known football figures including Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, and John Barnes, reflecting on the passage of time within their generation.

Looking Ahead With Optimism

Even while recovering, Brazil made it clear he is eager to return to talkSPORT and reconnect with listeners, especially with a busy sporting calendar ahead.

He highlighted upcoming football action and global tournaments as motivation during his recovery, insisting he is determined to get back to normal life as soon as possible.

His update comes weeks after missing key broadcast duties during the Cheltenham Festival period, marking a significant absence from his usual on-air presence.

For now, he continues to recover at home, focusing on rebuilding strength after what he described as a life-saving and deeply challenging operation.
