CANAL+ has reinforced its commitment to African sport after confirming an extension of its broadcasting partnership with the National Soccer League (NSL) for rights to air the Premier Soccer League across Sub-Saharan Africa via SuperSport.
The renewed arrangement ensures continued access to South Africa’s top-flight football and reflects CANAL+’s wider strategy of investing heavily in local sports and entertainment content following its acquisition of MultiChoice.
Full PSL competitions remain at the heart of the agreement
The extended deal covers the league’s major competitions, including the Betway Premiership, MTN8, Carling Knockout, Nedbank Cup, and the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
These tournaments remain among the most widely watched sporting properties on DStv, drawing significant audiences across the continent.
Through SuperSport’s coverage, fans will continue to receive comprehensive live broadcasts, highlights, and analysis of South Africa’s most prominent football competitions, maintaining the PSL’s strong visibility beyond national borders.
PSL leadership welcomes continued partnership growth
Orlando Pirates chairman and PSL figurehead Dr Irvin Khoza praised the renewal, highlighting the long-standing collaboration between the league and its broadcast partners in elevating South African football.
He noted that the partnership has contributed meaningfully to the development of clubs, improved league visibility, and expanded the game’s reach to a wider African audience over time.
CANAL+ highlights strategic African sports investment
The announcement follows CANAL+’s completed acquisition of MultiChoice and its subsequent listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, marking a major shift in the media landscape across the region.
Senior executives from CANAL+ and CANAL+ Africa, including MultiChoice CEO David Mignot and CANAL+ CEO Maxime Saada, described the renewed PSL agreement as a key milestone in their commitment to premium African sports content.
They emphasised that the competitiveness of the recently concluded Betway Premiership season—decided only on the final matchday—demonstrates the growing quality and appeal of South African club football.
Expanded coverage, innovation and fan engagement ahead
Beyond broadcasting rights, the renewed partnership is expected to deepen investment in production quality, storytelling, and digital innovation aimed at improving fan engagement.
The companies say the goal is to ensure supporters across Sub-Saharan Africa continue to enjoy extensive, high-quality coverage of PSL competitions, while also strengthening the long-term growth of South African football on the continental stage.
