Global private equity firm Warburg Pincus has appointed James von Moltke as a senior advisor and Executive-in-Residence, bringing the veteran financial executive into the firm with immediate effect.

Von Moltke will work primarily with Warburg Pincus’ European operations, drawing on his extensive experience across banking, financial services and technology.

His responsibilities will include helping the firm assess prospective investments while contributing to the growth and development of companies already within its European portfolio.

Focus on Financial Services and Technology

The new adviser is expected to have a particular focus on the financial and technology sectors, two areas where his career has given him considerable industry knowledge.

At Warburg Pincus, von Moltke will help identify and evaluate potential investment opportunities in Europe.

He will also work alongside portfolio companies, providing strategic insight intended to support value creation across the firm’s existing investments.

Nine Years as Deutsche Bank CFO

Von Moltke joins the private equity firm after a lengthy senior leadership career at Deutsche Bank AG, where he served as President from 2022.

Before becoming president, he spent nine years as the bank’s Chief Financial Officer and a member of its Management Board.

During that period, he was closely involved in Deutsche Bank’s transformation and helped shape and implement its “Global Hausbank” strategy.

His tenure also included a prominent role in the 2018 initial public offering of DWS Group GmbH & Co. KGaA, Deutsche Bank’s asset management affiliate.

He subsequently joined DWS’s Management Board in 2023 with responsibility for asset management.

Experience Spans Citi, Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan

Von Moltke’s experience extends well beyond Deutsche Bank.

Before joining the German lender, he served as Treasurer of Citigroup, where he was responsible for areas including capital, funding, liquidity and interest rate risk.

His earlier positions at Citigroup also included Head of Corporate M&A and Global Head of Financial Planning and Analysis, giving him experience across both strategic transactions and financial management.

Earlier in his career, von Moltke led Morgan Stanley’s global Financial Technology Advisory team.

He also spent a decade with J.P. Morgan, working across New York and Hong Kong, after beginning his career with three years at Credit Suisse First Boston in London.

A New Role Within Warburg Pincus

The appointment gives Warburg Pincus access to a senior financial executive with experience spanning global banking, technology, capital markets, mergers and acquisitions and asset management.

As Senior Advisor and Executive-in-Residence, von Moltke will bring that cross-sector perspective to the firm’s European investment activities, while working with both its investment teams and portfolio businesses.
