A Different Perspective on Today’s Transgender Debate
Although Beatie transitioned as an adult, he believes growing up in today’s social climate could have led him down a very different path.
He says he is grateful that he waited before making permanent medical decisions because it allowed him time to discover that becoming a parent was something he deeply wanted.
According to Beatie, younger people often experience changing priorities as they mature, and he worries that some adolescents may make life-altering decisions before fully understanding what they may want in the future.
Childhood Shaped by Personal Loss
Beatie’s early life was marked by tragedy after his mother died by suicide when he was just 12 years old.
He describes withdrawing emotionally during adolescence while trying to live up to the expectations of his father, whom he remembers as holding very traditional views about gender roles.
As a teenager known then as Trace LaGondino, he entered beauty pageants, modelled professionally and dated boys, despite privately feeling disconnected from that identity.
Eventually, he legally transitioned, changed his name to Thomas and underwent chest surgery, although he retained the ability to become pregnant.
A Long Road to Parenthood
After marrying Nancy in 2003, the couple decided Beatie would carry their children because she was unable to conceive.
Finding medical professionals willing to assist proved extremely difficult, and the couple spent years searching before securing donor sperm through a California sperm bank.
Their first pregnancy ended in an ectopic pregnancy involving triplets, a devastating experience that also made it clear they would struggle to keep their plans private.
A second pregnancy led to the now-famous photographs that would forever change Beatie’s life.
Legal Battles Continued After Birth
Even after the birth of his first child, Susan, Beatie encountered significant legal obstacles.
Officials initially listed him as the child’s mother on the birth certificate despite his legal status as male, forcing him to pursue legal recognition as his children’s father through adoption.
Years later, another legal challenge emerged during his divorce from Nancy, when an Arizona judge questioned the validity of their marriage because Beatie had given birth.
After years of court proceedings, the decision was overturned and the divorce was eventually finalized.
Building a New Chapter
Beatie later married Amber, whom he met while she worked at his children’s preschool.
Following lower surgery, which he says was undertaken for practical rather than symbolic reasons, the couple decided to expand their family together.
Amber carried their youngest child using the same sperm donor who fathered Beatie’s first three children, creating a biological connection among all four siblings.

Today, Beatie says his children have largely grown up without the difficulties many predicted.
His eldest daughter, Susan, is preparing to begin university, where she plans to study psychology.
