Stellenbosch FC are making moves for the upcoming 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, with a deal in principle to bring in highly-rated Cape Town Spurs midfielder Chumani Butsaka.
This comes after Spurs’ relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of last season sparked a flurry of transfer speculation.
A Stellar Performance from Butsaka
Butsaka, known for his role as a holding midfielder, was a standout player for the Urban Warriors last season.
He made 28 appearances across various competitions, netting one goal and delivering three assists.
Despite an initial rejection of Stellenbosch’s offer, recent reports from FARPost confirm that the two clubs have now reached an agreement.
Spurs’ Exits and New Arrivals
Butsaka’s move to Stellenbosch follows Ashley Cupido’s transfer from Spurs earlier this transfer window.
Cupido’s arrival was aimed at filling the gap left by Iqraam Rayners, who recently joined Mamelodi Sundowns on a long-term deal.
Planning for the Future with Butsaka
With the transfer window closing on August 20, 2024, Stellenbosch are preparing for life after Jayden Adams.
Although Adams is expected to stay with Stellenbosch for the 2024/25 season, the club is being proactive in securing a long-term replacement.
The Bafana Bafana international has been a target for Mamelodi Sundowns since his standout performance in the national squad’s bronze medal win at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Last season, Adams played 35 matches, scored three goals, and contributed eight assists.
New Faces in the Squad
In addition to Butsaka, Stellenbosch have bolstered their squad with new signings, including Lehlohonolo Mojela, Sanele Barns, Omega Mdaka, Brian Onyango, and Tylon Smith.
