Orlando Pirates have further strengthened their squad for the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign by completing the signing of midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi from Stellenbosch FC.
The move marks another major addition to the Buccaneers’ busy transfer window as the club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new season.
Three-Year Deal Seals New Chapter
The 23-year-old midfielder has signed a three-year contract with the Soweto giants and officially joined his new teammates on Wednesday.
Mokobodi has also been handed the number 33 jersey as he prepares for his first season in the famous black and white colors.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, the midfielder expressed his excitement about taking the next step in his career.
He described the transfer as a huge opportunity and said he is eager to contribute to one of South Africa‘s biggest football clubs while helping the team achieve success.

Mokobodi becomes Orlando Pirates’ ninth signing during the current transfer window, underlining the club’s determination to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.
He joins fellow newcomers Mthetheleli Mthiyane, Sbangani Zulu, Matome Mmolai, Bohale Ngwato, Ghampani Lungu, Neo Rapoo and Sebastian Pedersen.
Aphiwe Baliti also arrived during the window before returning to Siwelele FC on a loan spell.

Born in Soweto on November 11, 2002, Mokobodi first attracted widespread attention during his time at Marumo Gallants, where he developed into a reliable central midfielder.
His performances played a key role in helping the club secure promotion to the Betway Premiership, with his passing ability, composure on the ball and consistent displays earning admiration from several top-flight clubs.
Stellenbosch Spell Paved the Way
Stellenbosch FC secured Mokobodi’s services in August 2025, offering him a long-term contract after recognizing his growing potential.
During his time in the Cape Winelands, he featured in 28 matches and established himself as a dependable squad member.
His versatility and work ethic proved valuable as Stellenbosch maintained its status in the Betway Premiership.
Fresh Competition in Pirates’ Midfield
With his arrival, Orlando Pirates have added another option to an already competitive midfield department as they prepare for domestic competitions and continental football.
Operating primarily as a box-to-box central midfielder, Mokobodi is expected to compete for playing time alongside players including Thalente Mbatha, Masindi Nemtajela, Abdoulaye Mariko, Cemran Dansin and fellow new signing Matome Mmolai.
