Relations between Russia and Romania have become increasingly strained after Moscow announced the expulsion of a senior Romanian diplomat and the closure of Romania’s consular office in St Petersburg.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Romania’s ambassador to Moscow, Cristian Istrate, was summoned on June 25 and formally informed of the decision through a diplomatic note.
The move marks the latest escalation in a growing diplomatic dispute between the two countries.
Romanian Consul General Declared Persona Non Grata
During the meeting at the Foreign Ministry, Russian officials informed Ambassador Istrate that Romania’s Consul General in St Petersburg had been declared persona non grata, a designation that effectively requires the diplomat to leave the country.
Moscow also notified the Romanian envoy that Romania’s consular office in St Petersburg would cease operations as part of the measures announced by the Russian government.
Russian authorities did not provide a timeline for the closure but indicated that the decision was already finalized.
Russia Links Decision to Romanian Actions
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the measures were taken in direct response to steps recently adopted by Romanian authorities.
Moscow accused Bucharest of withdrawing consent for the operation of Russia’s Consulate General in the Romanian city of Constanta.
Russian officials also criticized Romania’s decision to declare the head of that diplomatic mission persona non grata.
The Kremlin described Romania’s actions as unjustified and argued that its response was based on the principle of reciprocity commonly applied in diplomatic disputes.
Diplomatic Tensions Continue to Rise
The latest exchange reflects the increasingly difficult relationship between Russia and several European nations since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
Diplomatic expulsions, consulate closures, and restrictions on diplomatic activities have become more common as countries on both sides of the dispute have taken retaliatory measures against one another.
