Trump Explodes at Big Oil: ‘You’re Robbing Americans!’ DOJ Probe Threat Looms

US President Donald Trump has directed the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate major oil companies over what he claims is a failure to pass lower crude oil costs on to consumers at the gas pump.

In a sharply worded social media post published shortly after midnight on Wednesday, Trump accused the industry of charging motorists unfairly high prices despite a significant drop in oil costs.

The president did not identify any specific companies in his remarks, and neither the White House nor the Justice Department provided additional details when contacted outside normal working hours.

Falling Oil Costs Spark New Political Pressure

Trump’s criticism comes at a time when global oil markets have experienced notable declines.

Recent diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran has helped ease tensions in the Middle East, contributing to lower energy prices and reducing concerns about supply disruptions.

As a result, American drivers have seen fuel costs decline for six consecutive weeks.

However, Trump argues that the reductions at service stations have been far too modest compared to the sharp fall in crude oil prices.

In his online message, he demanded that gasoline prices drop more rapidly, saying consumers should be benefiting much more from the cheaper cost of oil.

Fuel Prices Drop, But Not Enough for the President

According to data released by GasBuddy, the national average price for gasoline stood at $3.906 per gallon early Wednesday.

While that figure represents a decline of more than 14 percent from the highs recorded in May, it remains considerably above the levels seen at the start of the year.

Oil prices, meanwhile, have fallen much more dramatically.

Since May, crude prices have dropped approximately 23 percent, while US benchmark oil has lost around 40 percent of its value compared to its March peak.

The gap between the decline in crude prices and the slower reduction in retail fuel costs has become a key point of frustration for Trump.

Iran Deal Changes Global Energy Outlook

Energy markets have been influenced heavily by developments involving Iran.

The United States and Iran recently reached an interim peace agreement, helping reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Before hostilities disrupted trade, roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply moved through the waterway.

The restoration of shipping routes has eased fears of shortages and helped push crude prices lower, creating expectations that consumers would soon see greater relief at fuel stations.

Accusations of Price Gouging

In his Truth Social post, Trump argued that oil companies were benefiting from cheaper crude while failing to provide equivalent savings to drivers.

He claimed that the industry’s retail pricing was not keeping pace with the rapid decline in oil costs and described the situation as consumers being “gouged.”

Trump stated that companies were paying substantially less for oil while maintaining pump prices at elevated levels.

The president said he had instructed the DOJ to begin an immediate review of the issue.

Midterm Election Concerns Add to the Debate

The dispute over fuel prices arrives at a politically sensitive moment.

Rising living costs remain a major concern for American households, and energy prices often play a significant role in shaping public opinion.

With November’s midterm elections approaching, Republicans are working to defend their narrow majorities in Congress.

Any perception that consumers are not receiving the full benefit of lower energy costs could become a campaign issue in the months ahead.

Despite recent declines, gasoline prices remain well above the national average of $2.764 per gallon recorded in January, before tensions involving Iran escalated.

The continuing gap between crude oil costs and prices at the pump is likely to keep pressure on both the energy industry and policymakers as the election season intensifies.
