A murder investigation has been launched in South Wales after the body of a 14-year-old girl was discovered during a search for a missing teenager in a quiet community park.
Police confirmed the discovery late Monday night, turning what had been a missing persons case into a major criminal inquiry.
Search for Missing Girl Ended in Tragedy
The teenager, identified only as Lilly, was reported missing after she was last seen on Saturday evening in Blaina, a former mining village near Ebbw Vale.
She had been walking along the High Street around 6.50pm, dressed in a long black outfit.
Concerns quickly grew within her family and the local community, particularly after her mobile phone was switched off shortly before she was last seen.
Her mother, Gemma Jones, made emotional public appeals, expressing hope that her daughter had travelled to Cardiff and pleading for her safe return.
Witness Accounts and Final Sighting
Residents in the area began actively searching for the schoolgirl after news of her disappearance spread.
One local woman recalled seeing Lilly outside a kebab shop on the night she vanished, describing how the teenager appeared to be waiting for someone.
The witness said she spoke briefly to Lilly, telling her she looked nice, before watching her cross the road and walk through a churchyard.
That sighting is believed to be among the last confirmed movements before she disappeared from view.
Police Search Intensifies Across Duffryn Park Area
As concern escalated, police launched a coordinated search operation involving officers and drones, focusing on areas surrounding Blaina and nearby walking routes.
The search eventually led to the discovery of a body in the Duffryn Park area on Monday night, roughly half a mile from where Lilly was last seen.
The park and surrounding pathways were immediately cordoned off, with forensic tents erected to preserve the scene as investigators began gathering evidence.
Community Shock as Investigation Continues
The news has left residents deeply shaken in the small valley town, where many knew about the missing teenager and had joined informal search efforts.
Locals described a mood of disbelief and sadness as the situation shifted from a missing person case to a suspected homicide.
One resident said the community was struggling to process what had happened, noting that Blaina is a close-knit place where news travels quickly and people tend to look out for one another.
Police Confirm Murder Probe and Appeal for Information
Gwent Police confirmed that a murder investigation is now underway following the discovery of the female body on June 22 at around 10.10pm.
While formal identification has yet to be completed, Lilly’s family has been informed.
Detective Chief Inspector Steven Thomas said officers understand the distress the case will cause and confirmed that a significant police presence remains in the area as inquiries continue.
He urged anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward and assist the investigation through official police channels as detectives work to establish exactly what happened in the hours leading up to the discovery.
