President Donald Trump has threatened legal action against ABC News, accusing the network of publishing what he called inaccurate coverage of ongoing problems surrounding the renovation of the famous Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C.
The latest clash unfolded Monday evening as crews continued working to address a series of issues at the landmark site, including algae growth, peeling blue coating, and allegations of vandalism.
Trump used his Truth Social platform to criticize the broadcaster and suggest that any money recovered through potential lawsuits would be directed to the U.S. Treasury.
The dispute marks another chapter in Trump’s long-running battle with the media, particularly ABC News, which he referenced while discussing the renovation project.
Trump Defends Costly Renovation Project
In his social media post, Trump argued that reports about the Reflecting Pool failed to provide what he described as important historical context regarding previous spending on the site during the administrations of former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
According to Trump, more than $100 million had previously been spent on work related to the 2,000-foot-long pool, yet he claimed persistent problems remained unresolved.
He alleged that the landmark frequently suffered from leaks and unpleasant odors and said earlier proposals for repairs had carried projected costs reaching hundreds of millions of dollars.
Trump maintained that his administration’s renovation effort cost roughly $16 million and produced positive results before recent setbacks emerged.
He also stated that the project expanded beyond its original scope, requiring additional work in surrounding areas and along nearby sidewalks.
Threat of Lawsuits Targets Broadcaster
The president’s criticism quickly escalated into a direct threat of litigation.
Trump accused ABC News of spreading false information and reminded followers of a previous legal dispute involving the network.
Referring to an earlier settlement, he claimed ABC had already paid him millions of dollars over reporting he considered inaccurate.

Trump had directed contractors to drain the pool and apply a blue coating to its surface, arguing that the color would enhance reflections of the nearby Washington Monument.
However, shortly after the pool was refilled, visible problems began attracting public attention.
Large patches of algae appeared in the water, turning sections of the pool green.
At the same time, parts of the newly applied blue surface started peeling away, leaving exposed areas and floating debris.
Photographs from the site showed workers removing algae and fragments of coating as cleanup efforts intensified.
President Claims Vandalism Is Responsible
Trump has repeatedly argued that vandals are to blame for the deterioration.
He has alleged that individuals intentionally damaged the surface by cutting into the coating and introducing harmful chemicals into the water.
The president has not publicly released evidence supporting those claims, but he has continued to insist that sabotage caused the problems.
Following a personal inspection of the pool, Trump described the damage as shocking and announced that repair work would begin immediately.

Among those arrested was 67-year-old David Hearn, a former Olympic canoe athlete from Maryland.
Hearn said he stopped at the Reflecting Pool while on a bicycle ride and became curious about the newly applied surface.
According to his account, he briefly touched a section of coating that was already peeling from the bottom of the pool.
He said he was subsequently detained by National Guard personnel and U.S. Park Police for several hours before being released.
Former Olympian Denies Damaging Property
Hearn has rejected allegations that he harmed the renovated surface.
He maintains that he merely touched a loose piece of material that was already separating from the pool floor and insists he did not remove or damage anything.
According to Hearn, he was surprised by the response from authorities and found himself in handcuffs before fully understanding why he was being detained.
He is facing a misdemeanor charge related to destruction of government property and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
Questions Continue Over Cost and Contracting
As cleanup operations continue, critics have raised concerns about the overall expense of the renovation and the process used to award contracts for the project.
Reports have estimated the work cost more than $14 million, prompting debate over whether the investment delivered the intended results.
Despite the criticism, Trump has remained adamant that the renovation was successful before what he describes as acts of vandalism disrupted the project.
