Nearly two weeks after a terrifying shark attack left her fighting for her life, Sydney mother Leah Stewart has shared a heartwarming reunion with her baby daughter as her condition continues to improve.
The 34-year-old, who suffered catastrophic injuries during a great white shark attack at Coogee Beach on June 13, is no longer listed as being in critical condition.
Family members say she is now awake, alert and communicating with loved ones after spending days under heavy sedation.
The emotional moment came on Thursday when Stewart was finally reunited with her daughter, August, after 12 days apart.
According to her family, it was the first time mother and child had ever been separated.
Family Shares Encouraging Health Update
Stewart’s brother, Joshua, revealed that her recovery has exceeded expectations in recent days.
He explained that doctors have gradually reduced her sedation, allowing her to regain consciousness and begin interacting with both relatives and medical staff.
Family members have been encouraged by how quickly she has been able to speak and engage despite the severity of her injuries.
Joshua described the reunion between Stewart and her baby daughter as an incredibly joyful moment, saying both mother and child were thrilled to see each other again after the traumatic ordeal.
While Stewart has seen many of the messages of support sent from around Australia and beyond, her family noted that she is still unable to respond personally because she has not yet regained full use of her hand.
Multiple Surgeries and a Long Road Ahead
Doctors have performed several operations since Stewart was admitted to hospital following the attack.
One of those procedures involved the amputation of an arm due to the extent of her injuries.
She also sustained significant nerve and tendon damage to her remaining arm.
However, medical specialists remain optimistic that she will eventually recover full function in that limb.
Another surgery has been scheduled as part of her ongoing treatment and rehabilitation process.
Throughout her recovery, Stewart has remained under the care of medical teams at St Vincent’s Hospital, whose efforts were praised by her family for helping stabilize her condition following the attack.
Heroic Rescue at Coogee Beach
The attack unfolded off Coogee Beach when Stewart was swimming in waters where a great white shark, believed to be between three and four metres long, struck.
An off-duty lifeguard, Charlie Verco, who happened to be nearby in the surf, played a crucial role in the rescue.
Stewart was pulled onto a paddleboard and brought back to shore, where emergency responders immediately began life-saving treatment.
Paramedics administered multiple blood transfusions on the beach before she was airlifted to hospital.
Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later placed on life support while doctors worked to save her life.
Survivor Mentality Inspires Friends and Supporters
Friends, former students and colleagues have rallied around Stewart during her recovery, sharing stories that highlight her determination and resilience.
One person who knew her during her time teaching at Sydney Adventist School in Auburn recalled a conversation from about a decade ago involving the television show Australian Survivor.
The former student remembered Stewart enthusiastically discussing the program and saying she hoped to compete on it one day.
Reflecting on the shark attack, the supporter said Stewart had now become a survivor in the truest sense, expressing confidence that she would overcome the challenges ahead just as she has overcome the attack itself.
Today, Stewart works as a primary school teacher at Hurstville Adventist School, where colleagues and community members continue to rally behind her recovery.
Community Raises Hundreds of Thousands for Recovery
Public support for Stewart has been overwhelming.
A fundraising campaign established to help cover rehabilitation costs, prosthetic devices and ongoing medical expenses has attracted donations from thousands of supporters.
By Thursday, the campaign had raised more than $500,000, reflecting the widespread sympathy and admiration for her fight to recover.
Joshua said his sister remembers the attack clearly and may choose to share her experience publicly in the future.
For now, however, her focus remains on healing, regaining strength and spending precious time with her daughter.
He described her determination as extraordinary, saying she has fought through unimaginable circumstances with one goal in mind — returning to August.
Shark Monitoring Measures Introduced
The attack also prompted renewed attention on shark surveillance along Sydney’s coastline.
At the time of the incident, Coogee Beach was not being monitored by shark-detection drones because the area falls beneath a flight path that restricts drone operations.
Following the attack, authorities secured a temporary exemption that allows drones to monitor shark activity in the area.
As Stewart continues her recovery journey, her family says the outpouring of prayers, donations and messages has provided invaluable encouragement during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
