Russian air defense units intercepted and destroyed 822 Ukrainian fixed-wing drones overnight, according to Russia’s Defense Ministry, in one of the largest drone interception claims reported by Moscow during the war.
The ministry said the drones were detected and engaged across a wide area of western and southern Russia, as well as over the Black and Azov seas.
Drones Reportedly Detected Across 17 Regions
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the reported interceptions occurred over the Belgorod, Bryansk, Vladimir, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Oryol, Rostov, Ryazan, Tambov and Tula regions.
Drones were also reportedly intercepted over the Moscow region, Krasnodar region and Crimea.
The Defense Ministry’s account could not be independently verified.
Black and Azov Seas Also Targeted
Russia said its air defenses engaged Ukrainian unmanned aircraft not only over land but also above the Black and Azov seas.
The reported scale of the operation indicates that the drones were dispersed across a broad geographic area rather than concentrated around a single target.
Moscow has repeatedly reported large-scale Ukrainian drone attacks against Russian territory, with unmanned aircraft increasingly being used to strike targets far from the frontline.
Attack Took Place Over 12 Hours
The Russian Defense Ministry said the drone activity began at 8 p.m. Moscow time on August 15 and continued until 8 a.m. on August 16.
That corresponds to a 12-hour period during which Russian air defense forces claimed to have intercepted or destroyed the 822 aircraft.
The statement did not provide details on how many drones were destroyed at individual locations or identify the specific targets the aircraft were allegedly attempting to reach.
Moscow Reports Intensifying Drone Warfare
The latest figures highlight the growing importance of long-range drones in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Both sides have increasingly relied on unmanned aircraft to attack military, energy and industrial infrastructure well beyond the immediate battlefield.
Russia’s claim of more than 800 intercepted drones represents a particularly large reported overnight barrage, although the actual number launched and the extent of any resulting damage remain unclear.

The Defense Ministry statement focused on the claimed air-defense operation and did not provide a detailed account of casualties or damage resulting from the overnight attacks.
There was also no independent confirmation of Russia’s reported interception figure at the time of the announcement.
