The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is expected to release its final report into the fatal road crash involving former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua within the next 30 to 60 days.
NSIB Director-General Alex Badeh Jr. disclosed the timeline on Friday during a virtual engagement with transport journalists, saying the bureau has completed its investigation and submitted its findings to relevant stakeholders for review.
Draft Findings Sent to Stakeholders
Badeh explained that the NSIB is required by law to circulate its draft findings to the appropriate parties before publishing a final report.
He said the process is now at that stage, meaning the bureau expects the public version of the report to follow after stakeholders have had an opportunity to provide their observations.
“The report on Anthony Joshua’s accident should be out to the public in the next 30 to 60 days,” Badeh said.
NSIB Raises Concerns Over Police Cooperation
The NSIB chief also acknowledged difficulties in obtaining cooperation from the Nigeria Police during the investigation.
According to Badeh, the bureau received some assistance but not to the extent it had expected from the police and other agencies involved in the crash investigation.
He said differences over investigative jurisdiction have contributed to tensions between the agencies, noting that police authorities maintain that they have statutory responsibility for investigating road traffic accidents.
Safety Investigation Differs From Criminal Probe
Badeh stressed that the NSIB’s mandate is different from that of criminal investigators.
While law enforcement investigations can focus on establishing responsibility for an offence, safety investigations are designed primarily to determine what went wrong and develop recommendations aimed at preventing similar accidents in the future.
He said the bureau is working to strengthen its relationship with law enforcement and other government agencies to improve cooperation during future investigations.
Crash Claimed Two Members of Joshua’s Team
The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, in the Makun area of Ogun State along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Two members of Joshua’s team, Sina Ghami and Kevin “Latif” Ayodele, died in the crash, while Joshua sustained minor injuries.
The forthcoming NSIB report is expected to provide the bureau’s findings on the circumstances surrounding the accident and could include recommendations aimed at improving road safety.
Funding Remains Another NSIB Concern
Badeh also disclosed that the bureau is awaiting statutory funding contributions from some agencies within Nigeria’s transport sector.
He said the NSIB was still expecting a three per cent contribution from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and a six per cent contribution from the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, however, has continued to meet its financial obligations to the bureau, according to Badeh.
Joshua Returns to Boxing After Crash
Joshua has since resumed his professional boxing career following the accident.
Last month, he defeated Kristian Prenga by second-round knockout, despite being knocked down twice during the bout. The former heavyweight champion dedicated the fight to the memories of Ghami and Ayodele.
The NSIB’s final report is now expected to provide the public with its completed findings within the next one to two months.
