The search for an elderly Missouri couple who disappeared from their home in September has ended with the discovery of their bodies on a neighbouring property.

Leo Lindeman, 73, and his wife, Katherine Lindeman, 74, were found dead on Sunday, according to McDonald County Sheriff Rob Evenson.

Their bodies were discovered approximately 400 to 500 yards from their home near Anderson, in southwestern Missouri.

The couple were last seen on September 15 and are believed to have disappeared the following day.

They were officially reported missing on September 24.

Police Investigate Property Near Couple’s Home

Following the discovery, several deputies and detectives were seen gathering at a private property on Beehive Lane, according to local reports by KOAM.

Sheriff Evenson confirmed the location where the bodies were recovered but said the circumstances surrounding their deaths remain unclear.

The couple’s small white dog, a poodle named Itty Bitty, also disappeared around the same time and has not yet been found.

Authorities Previously Described Disappearance as a Mystery

Before the bodies were discovered, authorities had spent more than a month searching for the missing couple and examining properties surrounding their rural residence.

Evenson previously described the Lindemans as private individuals, explaining that their neighbours had not initially become concerned about their absence because they were accustomed to having little contact with them.

“We’ve got a bit of a mystery,” the sheriff told KNWA while discussing the investigation.

His office obtained a search warrant for the couple’s residence several days after they were reported missing.

Investigators dusted the property for fingerprints and collected electronic devices and trace evidence for examination.

Authorities also searched the surrounding area and neighbouring properties as part of their efforts to establish what happened to the couple.

Family Members Organised Extensive Search Efforts

Leo’s niece, LaShawnda Lindeman, previously shared details of the family’s efforts to locate the couple in a Facebook post in September.

She explained that relatives had spent several days searching the area around the couple’s residence.

During one search, family members enlisted the assistance of a private drone operator before a search and rescue team arrived with a dog to help examine the property.

Additional relatives returned the following day and worked alongside the sheriff’s office and another search company.

The operation involved two additional drones, three more search dogs and a large team of volunteers and personnel.

According to LaShawnda, approximately 15 acres of land were extensively searched during the operation.

However, the teams initially found no trace of Leo, Katherine or evidence that could explain their disappearance.

Sheriff Previously Expressed Frustration Over Lack of Leads

While the investigation was ongoing, Sheriff Evenson told KODE12 that authorities had struggled to establish what happened to the couple because of the limited evidence and lack of concrete leads.

He described the situation as frustrating and expressed hope that investigators would receive information capable of advancing the case.

“We’d like to have some leads, some solid leads, that will get us moving in the right direction, and I’m hopeful that will happen,” he said.

The discovery of the couple’s bodies on Sunday has brought the search to an end, although the circumstances of their deaths and the whereabouts of their missing dog remain unknown.
