Australia have left three of their leading fast bowlers, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, out of their squads for the forthcoming white-ball series against England as the team prepares for a demanding run of Test cricket.
The experienced trio featured in all three matches of Australia’s recent 2-1 Test series defeat to South Africa.
They will now be rested for the three-match ODI contest, which begins in Perth on November 13.
Cummins and Hazlewood Miss T20 Selection
Cummins and Hazlewood have also been excluded from Australia’s squad for the five-match T20 series against England, scheduled to begin on November 21.
Starc, 36, will not be considered for the shortest format, having already announced his retirement from T20 internationals.
Mahli Beardman, 21, has been selected for both formats and could earn his first international appearance during the ODI series.
Meanwhile, uncapped players Sam Harper and Lachlan Shaw have received places in the T20 squad.
Mitchell Marsh will captain both teams, with Cummins retaining his official position as Australia’s ODI skipper.
However, the 33-year-old has played only one 50-over international since November 2024, leaving Marsh to take charge once again.
Australia Make Changes Across Both Squads
Several players who featured in the recent Test series against South Africa have retained their places in the ODI squad but will not participate in the T20 fixtures.
Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Josh Inglis and Matt Renshaw have all been selected for the 50-over matches.
Nathan Ellis, who sustained a side strain during Australia’s September ODI tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe, has been included only in the T20 squad.
Fellow fast bowler Jack Edwards, who made his international debut during the same tour, has been named in both squads.
All-rounder Liam Scott returns to the ODI setup after playing one 50-over international against Bangladesh in June.
Spinners Nikhil Chaudhary and Joel Davies have been selected for the T20 series.
Both players made their international debuts in the format during the Bangladesh tour.
Jake Fraser-McGurk and Mitchell Owen have also been recalled to the T20 squad after missing Australia’s recent series, while Tim David has been selected exclusively for the 20-over matches despite recently returning to 50-over domestic cricket.
Australia Prepare for Demanding Test Schedule
Australia’s final T20 match against England is scheduled for December 2, after which the team will begin an extensive Test programme ahead of the Ashes.
The first assignment will be a four-match home Test series against New Zealand, starting on December 9.
Australia will then travel for a five-match series against India, which begins on January 21.
A one-off Test against England will follow at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from March 11.
The fixture will commemorate 150 years of the Ashes before the players turn their attention to the Indian Premier League.
Australia could also qualify for the World Test Championship final at The Oval on June 9, depending on their position in the competition.
The championship final would come shortly before the five-Test Ashes series against England, which is scheduled to run from June 18 to August 2.
The ODI World Cup in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe will then begin on October 7.
