Long before Chicken McNuggets became one of McDonald’s most successful menu items, the fast-food giant experimented with a very different bite-sized snack that has largely faded from public memory.
Although it failed to win over customers, the unusual creation ultimately paved the way for one of the company’s biggest culinary successes.
Onion Nuggets Were McDonald’s First Bite-Sized Snack
In 1976, McDonald’s introduced Onion Nuggets, a menu item made from chunks of onion coated in crispy golden batter and deep-fried.
The product was designed to offer customers a meat-free alternative to the chain’s signature burgers at a time when its menu was far more limited than it is today.
Despite the innovative concept, the snack failed to gain widespread popularity.
Many customers continued to favor traditional onion rings instead, leaving Onion Nuggets unable to establish a lasting place on the menu.
A Commercial Failure Sparked a Game-Changing Idea
Although Onion Nuggets disappeared from restaurants after their disappointing performance, they unexpectedly inspired one of McDonald’s greatest menu innovations.
Former product development chef René Arend later used the concept as the foundation for creating Chicken McNuggets in 1979 after receiving encouragement from then-chairman Fred Turner.
By replacing onions with bite-sized pieces of chicken, McDonald’s developed a product that would eventually become one of the brand’s most recognizable offerings.
Chicken McNuggets Became a Global Favorite
After several years of development, Chicken McNuggets officially launched in 1984 and quickly transformed into an international success.
The crispy chicken bites became a staple of McDonald’s menu across the world, generating decades of popularity and establishing themselves as one of the company’s signature products, far surpassing the impact of the forgotten Onion Nuggets that inspired them.
Fans Still Want Onion Nuggets Back
Even though the original product was considered a failure, Onion Nuggets have developed a loyal following online decades after disappearing from McDonald’s restaurants.
Social media users, particularly on Reddit, continue to campaign for their return.
Some fans have described the snack as surprisingly delicious and say they would eagerly order large portions if it ever made a comeback.
Others, however, have reacted less enthusiastically, calling the concept strange or even unappetizing.
The divided reactions have only added to the item’s cult status among McDonald’s enthusiasts who enjoy revisiting discontinued menu favorites.
McPizza Remains Another Forgotten Experiment
McDonald’s also recently looked back at another short-lived product that never achieved lasting success—McPizza.
The fast-food chain tested personal-sized pizzas in the United Kingdom during the mid-1990s, offering customers three different flavor options as part of a limited product trial.
Like Onion Nuggets, the concept failed to become a permanent addition to the menu and eventually disappeared.
While neither forgotten experiment survived, both remain memorable examples of McDonald’s willingness to test bold ideas—some of which quietly disappeared, while others, like Chicken McNuggets, went on to become global icons.
