Marvel Studios has officially revealed who will carry one of its most iconic superhero mantles into the future.
British actor David Jonsson has been chosen to lead Black Panther III, taking on the role of an adult Prince T’Challa in the next chapter of the blockbuster franchise.
The announcement was made during Comic-Con International by filmmaker Ryan Coogler, joined by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and returning stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke.
A New Generation Takes Center Stage
Rather than revisiting the original story, the third film will focus on Prince T’Challa, the son of the late King T’Challa and Nakia.
The character was first introduced as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, portrayed by young actor Divine Love Konadu-Sun.
With Jonsson now stepping into the role as the grown-up heir to Wakanda’s throne, Marvel is signaling the beginning of a fresh era for the beloved superhero series.
Following in Chadwick Boseman’s Footsteps
Jonsson succeeds the late Chadwick Boseman, whose portrayal of King T’Challa became one of the defining performances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The original Black Panther, released in 2018, became a global cultural phenomenon and earned approximately $1.35 billion at the worldwide box office.
Its 2022 sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, also proved to be a commercial success, generating around $859 million globally.
Boseman passed away in August 2020 at the age of 43 after a private battle with prostate cancer, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to shape the franchise.
David Jonsson Arrives With an Impressive Resume
Although becoming Black Panther marks the biggest role of his career, Jonsson is far from an unknown talent.
The London-born actor first gained recognition through stage performances before transitioning to television and film.
His screen credits include appearances in the detective drama Endeavour and the acclaimed series Industry, where he played Augustus “Gus” Sackey.
More recently, he starred in The Long Walk and received the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2025, cementing his reputation as one of Britain’s fastest-rising actors.
