The murder trial of a Massachusetts mother accused of killing her three young children took an emotional turn as police officers and emergency responders recounted the horrifying moments they discovered the victims inside the family home.
Several witnesses struggled to maintain their composure while describing the events that unfolded on the night of the tragedy, offering the jury a vivid account of the emergency response.
Officers Recall Entering the Family Home
Lindsay Clancy, 35, is on trial over the deaths of her children—five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan—who were found inside their Duxbury home in January 2023.
Clancy does not deny causing the deaths of her children. Instead, her defense argues that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, allegedly brought on by a combination of prescription medications used to treat depression, and therefore should not be held criminally responsible.
During Thursday’s proceedings, Duxbury Police Officer Stephen Hall became visibly emotional while describing how he responded to the emergency call.
He testified that the children’s father, Patrick Clancy, had entered the home before officers and reported that the children were unresponsive.
Hall told jurors he heard a scream from inside the residence before making his way to the basement, where the devastating scene unfolded.
Disturbing Scene Described to the Jury
Officer Brian Josephine also testified, recalling that he and Hall found Patrick Clancy in the dark basement, where he was shouting that his wife had killed the children.
Josephine described discovering Dawson lying motionless on the floor with discolored skin, bluish lips, and burst blood vessels in his eyes.
Based on his law enforcement training, he said he immediately feared the child could not be saved.
He attempted CPR before emergency crews arrived, but testified that foam emerged from Dawson’s mouth during resuscitation efforts.
Once paramedics reached the home, the child was carried upstairs for continued treatment while officers also requested medical assistance for Patrick Clancy, who appeared to be in severe shock.
Paramedics Detail Efforts to Save the Children
Firefighter and paramedic Jennifer Stratton testified that she found infant Callan and his sister Cora in the basement.
Jurors were shown photographs from the scene, including Callan’s pajamas, which had been removed during life-saving efforts, and exercise bands recovered from the area.
Stratton said the infant had pronounced marks around his neck consistent with strangulation.
She recalled carrying Callan outside to an ambulance in an effort to save his life.
Another firefighter and paramedic, Patrick Dwyer, testified that he entered the basement and found two children on the floor while Patrick Clancy sat nearby.
Dwyer told the court he immediately began CPR on Cora.
Crime Scene Images Presented During Proceedings
As testimony continued, prosecutors displayed several photographs collected during the investigation.
Among the exhibits were images of Callan’s clothing after emergency treatment and exercise bands that investigators allege were used in the killings.
The visual evidence accompanied testimony from first responders describing the desperate attempts made to revive the children despite their critical condition.
Defense Challenges Prosecution’s Suicide Attempt Narrative
Later in the proceedings, defense attorney Kevin Reddington questioned paramedics about Lindsay Clancy’s physical condition after she was found outside the home following an apparent suicide attempt.
Paramedic Robert Costanzo testified that Clancy had bandaged wrists and was wearing a cervical collar when he treated her.
Under questioning, he acknowledged he was unaware she had reportedly suffered a burst fracture in her cervical spine.
Reddington argued that darkness at the scene and cold weather could have affected observations regarding Clancy’s injuries, suggesting hypothermia may explain why her wounds were not actively bleeding.
Medical Testimony Examines Clancy’s Injuries
Paramedic Daniel Dougherty testified that temperatures were in the 30-degree range when Clancy was treated outside the home.
However, he said he could not determine how long she had been lying in the snow before emergency crews arrived.
Prosecutors have maintained that Clancy’s wrist wounds were relatively minor, noting they were not sutured until the following day and that injuries to her neck did not require stitches.
The trial is expected to continue as prosecutors seek to prove Clancy was legally responsible for the deaths of her three children, while the defense continues to argue that severe postpartum psychosis left her incapable of criminal responsibility at the time of the killings.
