Croatia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage with a determined 2-1 victory over Ghana, climbing above the Black Stars to finish second in Group L.
The result saw Zlatko Dalic’s side end the group phase on six points, overtaking Ghana, who had already secured qualification before kickoff but dropped to third following the defeat.
Croatia will now face the runner-up from Group K in the next round.
Croatia Set the Tempo From the Opening Whistle
Knowing a draw could still leave them in contention as one of the best third-placed teams, Croatia instead opted for an aggressive approach from the outset.
They nearly found the breakthrough in the 17th minute when Nikola Vlasic unleashed a powerful strike from outside the penalty area that beat the goalkeeper but clipped the outside of the post.
The early pressure eventually paid off just after the half-hour mark.
Petar Sucic Produces Stunning Opening Goal
Midfielder Petar Sucic gave Croatia a deserved lead in the 31st minute with a spectacular long-range effort.
Receiving the ball well outside the penalty area, the 22-year-old drove a powerful shot through a crowded defense before watching it fly inside the left post, leaving the goalkeeper with little chance.
The goal rewarded Croatia’s dominance during a first half in which Ghana struggled to create clear opportunities.
Ghana Fight Back After the Break
The Black Stars emerged with greater urgency after halftime and gradually began to put Croatia under sustained pressure.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen found space inside the penalty area during a free-kick and calmly guided the ball into the net to restore parity.
The equalizer shifted momentum and briefly raised hopes that Ghana could avoid defeat.
Vlasic Delivers the Decisive Moment
Croatia responded impressively to conceding and regained the lead just ten minutes later.
Veteran playmaker Luka Modric delivered a perfectly placed corner into the penalty area, where Nikola Vlasic escaped his marker before directing a header off the inside of the post and into the goal.
The late strike proved enough to hand Croatia all three points and seal their progression to the knockout rounds.
Sucic Makes Croatian World Cup History
Beyond opening the scoring, Sucic also etched his name into Croatia’s World Cup record books.
At 22 years and 245 days old, he became the second-youngest player ever to score for Croatia at a FIFA World Cup, trailing only Josko Gvardiol, who achieved the feat during the 2022 tournament.
His outstanding display also earned him the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match award.
Final Group L Standings Confirm Croatia’s Progress
England finished top of Group L with seven points after remaining unbeaten throughout the group stage.
Croatia secured second place with six points, while Ghana finished third on four points despite beginning the day above the Europeans.
Panama ended the tournament at the bottom of the standings after losing all three group matches.
Croatia now advances to the knockout stage full of confidence after producing one of its most determined performances of the tournament, while Ghana’s attention turns to regrouping following a disappointing finish to the group phase.
