Jeremy Kyle has spoken out for the first time since a coroner concluded that there was no direct link between a guest’s appearance on his show and his subsequent death.
The guest in question, Steve Dymond, appeared on “The Jeremy Kyle Show” on May 2, 2019, seeking to prove to his on-and-off partner, Jane Callaghan, that he hadn’t been unfaithful.
Dymond, a 63-year-old from Portsmouth, Hampshire, failed a lie detector test during the show and was found dead just a week later in the room he rented for £100 a week. His death was due to a morphine overdose.
Kyle’s Reflections
In an interview with The Sun, Kyle opened up about the emotional and physical strain he has endured over the past five years.
He expressed his thoughts on the tragedy and the intense scrutiny he faced.
“First and foremost, someone took their life because they saw no other way out,” Kyle said.
He explained that he remained silent out of respect due to the ongoing legal process, focusing instead on the impact on Dymond’s family and the hundreds of staff who lost their jobs as a result.
Kyle shared his personal reflections, acknowledging that he scrutinized himself following the incident.
“You look at yourself in the mirror, of course you do. You would be inhuman not to,” he said.
Despite the intense criticism, Kyle maintains that he did his best to present the show, and he feels his conscience is clear.
He emphasized that both ITV’s aftercare team and Dymond’s own GP had cleared him to appear on the show.
Public and Family Reactions
Following the coroner’s verdict, Kyle released a statement affirming that his name had been cleared of any wrongdoing.
The statement highlighted that the coroner found Kyle did not cause or contribute to Dymond’s tragic death.
Kyle expressed gratitude for the support he received during this challenging period and criticized the focus on him rather than the broader context of the tragedy.
On the other hand, Dymond’s son, Carl Woolley, expressed dissatisfaction with the show’s treatment of his father.
In a statement read outside the coroner’s court, Woolley criticized the show’s handling of Dymond and highlighted his distress during the filming.
He also noted that the accuracy of the lie detector test used was between 60 to 96 percent.
Woolley mentioned that the only positive outcome of his father’s death was the cancellation of the show.
Coroner’s Conclusion
The coroner, Jason Pegg, concluded that Dymond’s decision to take his own life was influenced by various stressors in his life, with his appearance on the show being just one of them.
Pegg emphasized that there was insufficient evidence to directly link the show or Kyle’s comments to Dymond’s distress.
He noted Dymond’s pre-existing mental health issues and previous history of self-harm and suicidal thoughts, which were present before his appearance on the show.
In summary, while Kyle and the show faced significant backlash, the coroner’s ruling found no direct causal link between the show’s treatment of Dymond and his subsequent death.
