Google has introduced a new education-focused initiative that will give eligible students in Nigerian tertiary institutions free access to Google AI Plus for 12 months as the country prepares for another academic session.
The programme, known as the Gemini Student Offer, is aimed at students aged 18 and above enrolled in accredited universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across Nigeria.
The subscription is valued at ₦92,400 per student, potentially giving thousands of Nigerian students access to advanced artificial intelligence tools without paying the normal subscription cost.
Previous Beneficiaries Can Renew
The initiative is not limited to first-time users. Students who accessed the offer during the previous academic year can also renew their subscriptions for another 12 months.
They will, however, need to verify that they remain eligible students before receiving continued access.
Nigeria is among 27 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa included in the latest rollout, highlighting Google’s broader push to expand access to AI-powered educational technology across the region.
What Students Will Get for Free
The Google AI Plus package gives students access to a range of tools designed to support studying, research and digital productivity.
Through the Gemini app, eligible users will receive higher usage limits, access to Gemini Omni, Gemini Live for real-time voice conversations and Deep Research for more advanced academic research.
The package also includes custom practice quizzes, unlimited file uploads and 400GB of cloud storage.
Students will additionally be able to use features such as Gemini Study Notebooks, which can transform lecture notes and other course materials into quizzes and structured lesson plans.
AI Tools Designed to Support Learning
Google says the programme is intended to strengthen students’ understanding rather than encourage them to use artificial intelligence as a shortcut for completing academic work.
One of the key features is Guided Learning, a Gemini mode designed to function more like a tutor. Instead of immediately providing an answer, it can offer hints, ask guiding questions and help students work through difficult concepts.
The company says the approach is particularly useful for students who need additional support outside traditional classroom settings.
Google Points to West African Study
Google has cited research conducted by Google DeepMind involving 1,763 students in West African schools as evidence of the potential benefits of Guided Learning.
According to the company, students who used the feature recorded learning gains equivalent to between 1.2 and 1.7 years over an eight-week period.
Google also said more than 90% of the interactions examined were focused on understanding concepts, while only 2% resulted in students receiving direct solutions.
The findings form part of Google’s argument that AI can be used as an educational companion rather than simply as an answer-generating tool.
Lecturers Can Use Gemini Through Google Classroom
The initiative also extends into the classroom environment through integration with Google Classroom.
Lecturers can keep Gemini operating in Guided Learning mode, giving students access to AI assistance while maintaining safeguards around classroom information.
Google says student and classroom data will not be used to train its AI models under the Classroom integration.
That distinction could become increasingly important as schools and universities continue to debate how artificial intelligence should be incorporated into education without compromising academic integrity or student privacy.
More Than Just a Chatbot
The offer provides students with several additional features beyond conventional AI conversations.
Gemini Live allows users to engage in real-time voice discussions, while Deep Research can assist with brainstorming and more extensive research tasks.
Students can also access interactive 3D visualisations within chats and use Google Lens Homework Helper to work through equations or interpret diagrams.
The combination is designed to give students tools covering everything from revision and research to visual learning and problem-solving.
Google Says AI Could Give Nigerian Students an Advantage
Google’s Director for West and East Africa, Olumide Balogun, said the initiative reflects the company’s belief that artificial intelligence could have a major impact on education and economic opportunity in Nigeria.
He described AI as a defining technological development and argued that Nigeria’s young population and entrepreneurial culture make the country well positioned to benefit from the technology.
Balogun said removing the financial cost of accessing advanced AI tools could allow students to develop digital skills, tackle difficult subjects and become more competitive in the international economy.
Access Requires Student Verification
The free subscription is not automatically available to every person who claims to be a student.
Eligible applicants must verify their enrolment through SheerID before claiming the 12-month subscription through Google’s student offer portal.
The requirement is intended to ensure that the promotion reaches students enrolled in recognised Nigerian tertiary institutions.
What’s Next for Nigerian Students?
The expansion of Google’s student AI programme comes as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in education, research and the workplace.
For Nigerian students, the offer could provide access to tools that might otherwise be expensive, particularly for those using AI for research, revision, digital skills development and academic projects.
The bigger challenge will be ensuring that students use the technology responsibly while continuing to develop their own understanding and academic abilities.
Summary
Google has launched a 12-month free Google AI Plus subscription for eligible students aged 18 and above at accredited Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The ₦92,400-valued offer includes advanced Gemini features, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Guided Learning, study tools, unlimited file uploads and 400GB of cloud storage.
Students who received the offer last year can renew after confirming their current student status. Google says the programme is designed to expand affordable access to AI while supporting genuine learning rather than academic dishonesty.
