Germany Records Hottest Temperature in Its History as Intense European Heatwave Continues

Joseph Benjamin

Germany may have experienced its hottest day on record after temperatures climbed above 41°C during an intense heatwave that continues to grip much of Europe.

According to the country’s national weather service, a monitoring station in Saarbrücken-Burbach, near the French border, registered a temperature of 41.3°C (106.3°F). The reading is still undergoing official verification but, if confirmed, it will become the highest temperature ever recorded in Germany.

New Reading Could Surpass 2019 National Record

The reported temperature would narrowly exceed Germany’s previous all-time record of 41.2°C (106.2°F), which was set in July 2019 at weather stations in Duisburg-Baerl and Tönisvorst.

Meteorologists said the extreme temperatures were fueled by a prolonged period of high atmospheric pressure, allowing heat to build across large parts of the country over several consecutive days.

Forecasters also warned that some areas could once again approach the 41°C mark on Sunday before cooler conditions gradually begin to arrive.

Hot Nights Add to Public Health Concerns

Beyond the daytime heat, weather experts say overnight conditions are expected to remain unusually warm.

Large parts of Germany are forecast to experience so-called tropical nights, where temperatures stay above 20°C (68°F) after sunset. Such conditions can make it difficult for homes to cool down and increase health risks, particularly for older adults and vulnerable people.

Although daytime temperatures are expected to fall below 30°C (86°F) across most of the country by Monday, forecasters say humidity levels are likely to rise before the heat begins to ease.

Europe Continues to Experience Extreme Weather

Germany’s record-breaking temperatures are part of a broader heatwave affecting several European countries.

In recent days, the Netherlands issued its first-ever Code Red warning for extreme heat, while France, the United Kingdom, and Spain have also reported exceptionally high temperatures and, in some cases, new weather records.

The prolonged spell of extreme heat has prompted authorities across the continent to issue health warnings and encourage residents to take precautions as unusually high temperatures continue to impact millions of people.
