Auckland-based venture capital firm GD1 has reached a NZ$56.7 million first close for its second core fund, strengthening its ability to finance New Zealand technology companies from their earliest stages through major growth rounds.
The fund is designed to support founders with ambitions to build businesses capable of competing in international markets.
New Fund Targets 25 Technology Companies
Known as GD1 Core Fund 2, the new vehicle plans to invest in approximately 25 companies spanning the Pre-Seed to Series B stages.
Its investment mandate covers a broad range of technology sectors, including deep tech, connected hardware, health tech, software-as-a-service and marketplaces.
The strategy gives GD1 room to back companies at different points in their development, from early ideas and emerging products through businesses that have already demonstrated market traction and are preparing for larger-scale expansion.
Three Investments Already Completed
GD1 has already begun deploying capital from the new fund, with three initial investments made across cybersecurity, critical minerals discovery and space technology.
The early deals provide an indication of the fund’s focus on technology businesses addressing complex problems and potentially serving markets well beyond New Zealand.
Operator-Led Approach Remains Central
GD1 describes itself as an operator-led venture capital firm focused on New Zealand founders building category-defining companies.
Rather than limiting its role to providing capital, the firm says it combines investment with operating expertise, networks and support designed to help companies expand globally.
The firm’s investment approach has historically covered companies from inception through Series B, with a particular emphasis on helping New Zealand startups translate local innovation into international growth.
GD1 currently describes its strategy as backing globally ambitious early-stage technology companies and providing access to networks spanning investors, technologists, engineers, customers and scientists.
Leadership Team Brings Investment and Operating Experience
The second fund is being led by GD1’s senior investment team, including General Partners Aaron Small and Nawaz Ahmed, alongside Co-Managing Partners Vignesh Kumar and John Kells.
GD1’s current team structure lists Kumar and Kells as Co-Managing Partners, while Ahmed serves as a General Partner with a focus on crypto.
The firm has also highlighted its broader operator-led model and experience working with technology businesses across New Zealand and international markets.
A Broader Bet on New Zealand’s Global Technology Ambitions
The new fund reinforces GD1’s long-standing focus on companies originating in New Zealand but targeting global markets.
The firm’s stated mission is to help local founders and teams build companies capable of succeeding on the world stage, with its portfolio including technology businesses across areas such as manufacturing, insurance technology, retail intelligence and health technology.
With NZ$56.7 million committed at the first close and three investments already completed, GD1 Core Fund 2 marks another major step in the firm’s effort to identify and finance the next generation of New Zealand technology companies.
