Joe Root has called on England’s Test players to become strong role models both on and off the cricket field as he begins his second spell as captain.
The 35-year-old returns to the leadership role for the first time since stepping down in 2022, taking over from Ben Stokes ahead of England’s opening Test against Pakistan at Headingley on Wednesday.
Root’s appointment comes at a difficult moment for the Test side, which has endured a turbulent period involving poor results, disciplinary controversies and major changes to its coaching and leadership structure.
A Chance to Repair England’s Image
Root acknowledged that England have not always represented themselves in the best possible manner during recent months and believes the players now have an opportunity to change that perception.
“You always want to represent your country in the best possible light,” Root said.
He admitted that the team had fallen short of that standard on occasions but argued that the response should come through the players’ conduct and performances.
For Root, that means setting a positive example away from the cricket field while producing the kind of performances expected from an England side.
Turbulence Has Followed the Test Team
England’s problems have extended beyond their results.
During last winter’s tours, Harry Brook was involved in an incident in Wellington in which he was reportedly punched by a nightclub bouncer, while the team’s drinking during a mid-Ashes break in Noosa also attracted criticism.
England subsequently suffered a heavy 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia.
The turmoil continued during the summer, when Stokes broke a team curfew.
The incident was followed by a difficult period that included a 2-1 series defeat by New Zealand, Stokes’ decision to retire from international cricket and the dismissal of Test coach Brendon McCullum.
Root Wants to Build Rather Than Start Again
Despite the upheaval, Root does not believe England need to abandon everything established during the previous four years.
He said the team had developed plenty of positive qualities during Stokes’ tenure and McCullum’s time in charge, arguing that those foundations should be retained while improvements are made.
Root described the challenge as one of “fine tuning and evolving” the existing approach rather than completely rebuilding the side.
That could allow England to preserve elements of the aggressive style associated with the Stokes-McCullum era while adapting to a new leadership structure.
Fleming’s Arrival Adds to the Transition
Stephen Fleming has been appointed as McCullum’s replacement, although he will not oversee the Pakistan series.
Batting coach Marcus Trescothick will instead serve as interim head coach for the three-match series, adding another layer to a period of transition for the Test team.
Root, who previously captained England in 65 Tests between 2017 and 2022, will therefore begin his second tenure alongside a side still adjusting to several significant changes.
Root Refuses to Copy Stokes
One of Root’s biggest challenges will be establishing his own leadership identity rather than attempting to reproduce Stokes’ approach.
Root described Stokes as a unique cricketer whose qualities cannot easily be replicated, insisting that England’s new era should naturally have a different character.
He believes there is little value in trying to become a second version of his predecessor.
Instead, Root intends to bring his own personality and leadership style to the role, with his calm temperament potentially providing stability after a chaotic period.
The First Test Provides an Immediate Test
England’s opening match against Pakistan gives Root an immediate opportunity to establish the standards he wants from his players.
The new captain has made clear that conduct away from the field will be just as important as what happens during the match.
With England attempting to recover from a difficult summer, Root’s message is straightforward: represent the country properly, behave responsibly and allow performances on the field to begin defining the team’s next chapter.
