Homestead Capital has completed the first close of a new private credit strategy designed to provide financing to agricultural businesses across the United States, marking an expansion of the investment manager’s existing focus on the agriculture sector.
The San Francisco-based firm said the inaugural commingled fund will originate senior secured loans for agricultural borrowers, with financing primarily backed by farmland and other agricultural assets.
$150 Million Commitment Anchors Initial Fundraising
The first close was anchored by a $150 million commitment from the private credit investment team of a large U.S. state pension system.
The commitment provides a significant foundation for Homestead Capital as it seeks to build out the new strategy.
Homestead is targeting $350 million in total commitments from investment partners and has established a hard cap of $500 million for the fund.
Strategy Targets Underserved Agricultural Financing Needs
The new private credit platform will draw on Homestead Capital’s established agricultural investment operations to offer flexible financing to what the firm describes as high-quality agricultural operators.
Its primary focus will be senior secured loans collateralized by farmland and other agricultural assets.
The strategy is intended to address financing requirements that may not be fully served by traditional agricultural lenders, giving borrowers access to capital structured around the characteristics of their businesses and assets.
Homestead Expands Beyond Farmland Equity Investments
Founded in 2012, Homestead Capital has built its investment platform around acquiring, financing and managing diversified portfolios of farmland across the United States.
The firm operates across both equity and credit strategies, with an emphasis on risk management and differentiated portfolio construction.
Its approach to agriculture investing includes opportunities to enhance asset value through capital improvements, customized farm management, crop selection and rotation, and economies of scale.
Firm Manages About $1.8 Billion in Assets
Homestead Capital currently manages approximately $1.8 billion in combined equity and credit assets.
The launch of its new commingled private credit strategy adds another avenue for the firm to deploy capital within the U.S. agricultural market.
By combining its existing knowledge of farmland assets with a dedicated lending strategy, Homestead is positioning the fund to provide secured financing while continuing to build its broader agriculture-focused investment platform.
