Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori is recovering in hospital after suffering multiple fractures in a serious road accident in Newmarket, Suffolk, raising fresh uncertainty over his planned return to competitive riding later this year.

The 55-year-old was driving when another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of his car, causing it to spin before overturning.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported Dettori to hospital, where doctors continue to monitor his condition.

Multiple Fractures Confirmed Following Collision

Medical assessments revealed that Dettori sustained several broken ribs along with a fractured thumb.

While his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, he remains under observation as specialists carry out additional scans to determine the full extent of the damage.

His management team confirmed that the former champion jockey is focusing entirely on his recovery and will remain in hospital until doctors are satisfied with his progress.

Statement Expresses Gratitude to Emergency Responders

In a statement issued on his behalf, Dettori thanked everyone involved in his rescue and treatment.

His representatives explained that another vehicle collided with the rear passenger side of the car he was driving, causing the vehicle to spin and flip over.

They confirmed that he was taken to hospital, where examinations identified multiple broken ribs and a broken thumb.

The statement added that further medical assessments are ongoing and requested privacy for Dettori and his family while he recovers, noting that no further updates will be provided until there is significant news regarding his condition.

Planned Return to Racing Now in Doubt

The accident has cast serious doubt over Dettori’s expected appearance in the Betfred Leger Legends charity race at Doncaster in September.

The event had been scheduled to mark his return to the saddle after officially stepping away from professional racing earlier this year.

Fans had been eagerly anticipating seeing one of horse racing’s greatest figures compete once more, but his injuries now leave those plans uncertain.

A Career That Defined Modern Horse Racing

Dettori brought the curtain down on an extraordinary 35-year career with a final victory celebration in Brazil in February.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest jockeys in racing history, he accumulated more than 3,300 winners during his career and became a global sporting icon.

Among his most celebrated achievements remains his unforgettable performance at Ascot in September 1996, when he won all seven races on the card—a feat forever remembered as “The Magnificent Seven.”

His trademark flying dismount after major victories became one of the most recognizable celebrations in horse racing.

Financial Troubles Overshadowed Retirement

Although Dettori enjoyed enormous success on the track and reportedly earned around £20 million during his career, his final years in the sport were complicated by financial difficulties.

He became embroiled in a prolonged dispute with HM Revenue & Customs, later revealing that he had been trying to resolve problems linked to advice received from a financial adviser.

Despite those efforts, he was declared bankrupt.

Court proceedings later extended his bankruptcy after trustees argued that he had failed to fully disclose his financial assets.

During hearings, concerns were raised over undisclosed properties in France and Italy, as well as valuable possessions including a luxury watch, an extensive wine collection and investments worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The insolvency court also heard criticism over what was described as a failure to provide requested financial information during the bankruptcy process.

Another Serious Accident in a Remarkable Life

Thursday’s collision is not the first time Dettori has narrowly escaped tragedy.

In 2000, he survived a devastating plane crash near Newmarket that claimed the life of pilot Patrick Mackey.

Dettori and fellow jockey Ray Cochrane managed to escape the wreckage after the aircraft crashed and caught fire.

Cochrane later recalled the terrifying moments before impact, describing how the aircraft bounced during takeoff before striking the ground, flipping over and bursting into flames.

He managed to pull himself free before helping the injured Dettori from the wreckage, but attempts to rescue the pilot proved impossible because of the intense fire.

Dettori suffered significant injuries in the crash but recovered to continue one of the most successful careers the sport has ever witnessed.

Focus Turns to Recovery

For now, racing has taken a back seat as Dettori concentrates on healing from his latest setback.

Support has continued to pour in from across the racing community, while his management team has emphasized that his immediate priority is rest and rehabilitation.

Whether he will be fit in time for his anticipated return at Doncaster will depend on the outcome of his ongoing medical treatment and recovery in the weeks ahead.
