Ukraine is continuing emergency response operations after a large-scale overnight Russian missile and drone attack struck Kyiv and several other regions, leaving at least 13 people dead and dozens more injured, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Rescue teams remain at multiple impact sites across the capital, searching through debris, assisting survivors and assessing the extent of the destruction following one of the largest aerial assaults in recent months.
Residential Areas Among Hardest Hit
President Zelenskyy said the attack caused damage at more than 20 locations throughout Kyiv, with residential neighborhoods bearing the brunt of the strikes.
He said civilian infrastructure, including an ambulance station, a scientific institute, a hotel and several commercial properties, also sustained damage during the bombardment.
Authorities continue to evaluate affected sites as recovery efforts progress.
Death Toll Rises as Injuries Exceed 90
According to Ukrainian officials, at least 13 people were killed in the strikes on Kyiv.
More than 90 others were injured, with emergency services providing medical treatment and other assistance to those affected.
Zelenskyy expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and said all injured victims were receiving the necessary support.
Multiple Regions Targeted Overnight
Beyond Kyiv, officials reported additional casualties and infrastructure damage in other parts of the country.
Five people, including a child, were injured in the Kharkiv region, while two more people were reported injured in the Kyiv region following attacks on civilian infrastructure.
The president also said Russian strikes were carried out overnight in the Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Cherkasy regions.
Hundreds of Weapons Launched During Assault
Zelenskyy stated that Russia launched more than 70 missiles of various types during the overnight operation, with nearly half identified as ballistic missiles.
He also said approximately 500 attack drones, including jet-powered Shahed drones, were deployed against Ukraine.
According to the president, the primary focus of the assault was the capital, Kyiv.
Air Defenses Intercept Many Targets
Ukraine’s air defense forces succeeded in destroying a significant number of incoming missiles and drones, Zelenskyy said.
However, he acknowledged that not every aerial threat was intercepted, allowing several projectiles to reach their intended targets and cause extensive destruction.
Emergency responders continue working at impact locations where buildings were damaged or destroyed.
Zelenskyy Calls for Greater Air Defense Support
Following the attack, the Ukrainian president renewed calls for additional international military assistance, emphasizing that strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities remains a critical priority.
He urged partner nations to continue supporting the PURL program and highlighted the importance of bilateral agreements that have helped expand Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
Patriot Cooperation Highlighted
Zelenskyy also called for progress on joint anti-ballistic missile production projects and expressed hope that the United States would approve additional licenses related to Patriot air defense systems.
He said enhanced cooperation on advanced air defense technology would strengthen Ukraine’s ability to protect civilians and counter future missile and drone attacks.
The president thanked Ukraine’s international partners for their continued assistance, saying sustained support remains essential to protecting lives and strengthening the country’s defenses amid the ongoing conflict.
