The 2027 AFC Asian Cup has been postponed by almost a year, with Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the competition disrupted by escalating security concerns and travel difficulties across the Middle East.
The tournament, which was scheduled to begin in less than two months, will now take place between December 23, 2027, and January 21, 2028, subject to approval from FIFA.
The decision follows a renewed escalation of the conflict involving Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement, raising concerns about the safety of players, officials and spectators.
Missile Attacks Disrupt Saudi Arabia’s Airports
Saudi Arabia’s aviation operations have been affected by recent attacks, with major airports operating reduced services.
A missile strike by Yemen’s Houthi movement on Riyadh’s airport reportedly killed 13 people.
A separate attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam also left two people dead.
The disruption has created significant difficulties for the 24 national teams expected to participate in the continental competition, particularly regarding international travel and tournament arrangements.
Asian Football Confederation Explains Decision
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirmed the postponement in a statement, citing exceptional circumstances arising from developments across the region.
The organisation said its Asian Cup Organising Committee had approved the revised schedule because of substantial logistical complications and travel disruptions.
It added that the new tournament dates would be submitted to FIFA for approval.
According to the AFC, the circumstances had made it necessary to delay the competition to protect the interests of participating teams, tournament officials, spectators and other stakeholders.
Premier League Clubs Avoid Losing International Players
The postponement means several Premier League clubs will no longer face the prospect of losing key players for up to a month during the domestic season.
Japan had 10 Premier League players available for selection ahead of the competition, including several who could have been absent from their clubs if their national team progressed to the final.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki was among the players who could have been called up.
Crystal Palace also faced the possibility of losing Takehiro Tomiyasu and Daichi Kamada for as many as five Premier League matches.
Ipswich forward Daizen Maeda, who has made 10 appearances this season, was another potential Japan selection, alongside Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma, who is currently injured.
Manchester City were also expected to be without Uzbekistan international Abdukodir Khusanov during the tournament.
Second Consecutive Asian Cup Delayed
The latest postponement marks the second successive edition of the Asian Cup to be moved from its original schedule.
The 2023 tournament was also postponed by a year because of the Covid pandemic.
The competition’s latest disruption comes amid a wider series of cancellations and postponements affecting sporting events in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia Loses Several Major Sporting Events
The PIF-backed Asian Tour Saudi International golf tournament has been indefinitely postponed, while the Six Kings Slam tennis tournament scheduled for Riyadh has been cancelled.
The tennis exhibition was expected to feature leading players, including Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev.
However, some sporting events have continued in the country despite the security situation.
Last weekend, Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez reclaimed the WBC super-middleweight title after defeating Christian Mbilli on points in Riyadh.
The Saudi capital is also scheduled to host WWE Crown Jewel on Saturday.
Formula 1 Continues to Monitor Middle East Situation
The Formula 1 season is scheduled to conclude in the Middle East, with the penultimate race taking place in Qatar at the end of November before the championship finale in Abu Dhabi in early December.
Formula 1 intends to proceed with both events but is continuing to monitor developments in the region.
Saudi Arabia is also scheduled to host the second race of the 2027 Formula 1 season in mid-March.
There are currently no plans to cancel that event, although this year’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was called off.
