The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) is committing $1 billion to new and expanded investment initiatives under its existing $6 billion Defence Platform, directing capital toward funds supporting defence and dual-use technologies.

The allocation includes $500 million for venture capital, growth equity and private equity funds focused on strategically important technologies, alongside a further $200 million investment in StrongNorth, increasing the fund’s total size from $300 million to $500 million.

$500 Million Dedicated to Defence-Focused Funds

Through the Defence Fund, BDC will commit $500 million to investment funds backing companies developing technologies with applications in both civilian and defence markets.

The programme will invest in Canadian funds as well as funds based in allied countries that have exposure to Canadian companies.

The strategy is designed to expand access to capital for businesses working on technologies considered important to Canada’s defence and sovereignty priorities.

BDC’s investment areas include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, space, advanced materials, quantum technologies and energy systems.

Intrepid Growth Partners Secures First Investment

The first investment under the new fund allocation has been made in Intrepid Growth Partners’ inaugural US$525 million fund.

The fund targets high-growth artificial intelligence companies operating across Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and Europe, giving BDC exposure to businesses developing AI technologies across several major markets.

StrongNorth Fund Reaches $500 Million

BDC is also increasing its commitment to StrongNorth by $200 million, taking the venture capital fund from $300 million to $500 million.

StrongNorth is BDC’s dedicated venture capital fund for early-stage companies developing deep technologies with defence-focused or dual-use applications and strategies.

Its investment focus spans artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, cybersecurity, secure communications, space technologies and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).

The fund also targets advanced materials and energy technologies.

BDC Targets Strategic Technology Development

The investments form part of BDC’s broader Defence Platform, which has a total commitment of $6 billion.

Rather than investing directly in individual companies through this particular allocation, BDC is backing specialist funds capable of providing capital to technology businesses at different stages of development, from early-stage ventures to growth and private equity opportunities.

The approach brings together several investment categories while maintaining a focus on technologies relevant to Canada’s defence capabilities and technological sovereignty.

BDC Led by Isabelle Hudon

BDC is led by President and CEO Isabelle Hudon and focuses on supporting small and medium-sized business owners across Canada.

The institution provides financing, investment and advisory services to businesses, with its latest defence-related commitments extending that mandate into sectors such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology, cybersecurity, space and advanced energy systems.
