Former Public Protector Mkhwebane makes political comeback as EFF MP

Busisiwe Mkhwebane, who was removed from her position as Public Protector in September, has been sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Mkhwebane has said that she joined the EFF voluntarily and without any expectation of personal gain. She has also stated that she will not seek any positions or deployments within the party.

Mkhwebane’s qualifications

The EFF has said that Mkhwebane “boasts a rich history in civil service, including key roles as a Senior Researcher for the SAHRC, Senior Investigator in the Office of the Public Protector, and Director in the Department of Home Affairs.”

Why was Mkhwebane axed?

Mkhwebane was removed from her position as Public Protector after the National Assembly voted in favor of her dismissal. The vote came after a Section 194 Committee found that Mkhwebane was not fit to hold office.

Mkhwebane’s reaction to her dismissal

Mkhwebane has said that she will challenge her dismissal in court. She has also accused the Section 194 Committee of being biased against her.
