Marrion Areola, the wife of West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, has taken another swipe at former manager Nuno Espirito Santo following his dismissal from the club.

Shortly after West Ham confirmed on Tuesday morning that Nuno had been relieved of his duties, Marrion shared several posts on Instagram that appeared to celebrate the Portuguese manager’s departure.

In one post, she shared a photograph of herself smiling.

Another showed her skipping along the streets with Sam Phillips’ song Happy playing in the background.

She also uploaded a clip from the popular film The Sound of Music, featuring the song So Long, Farewell.

The lyrics include phrases such as “so long”, “good night”, “Auf Wiedersehen”, “Adieu” and “Au revoir”, which appeared to serve as a farewell message directed at Nuno.

Marrion had previously criticised the manager over his treatment of her husband, who lost his starting position during Nuno’s time in charge.

Edson Alvarez Likes West Ham’s Announcement

Marrion’s reaction came as other figures connected to West Ham appeared to respond to the managerial change.

Mexican midfielder Edson Alvarez, who has yet to make an appearance in the Championship this season, liked the club’s Instagram announcement confirming Nuno’s departure.

Former West Ham academy graduate George Earthy, who now plays for Reading, also appeared to have liked the post.

Marrion Previously Blamed Nuno and Graham Potter for Relegation

The latest social media activity follows a series of posts Marrion published during the summer, in which she criticised Nuno and his predecessor, Graham Potter, over West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League.

Sharing a photograph of her husband lifting the Europa Conference League trophy in 2023, she wrote: “From a trophy to relegation.

Thank you Potter for the start of this season and Nuno for the end.”

She also accused Nuno of dropping Areola without a proper explanation after the goalkeeper lost his place to Mads Hermansen.

“Being dropped at the beginning of the season for no reason,” she wrote.

“Being back after a very bad start and then has made 20 games and all of a sudden: ‘I’m really sorry – you won’t start’, ‘Why?’, ‘For no particular reason but I’m sorry’.”

Marrion also revisited a post from December highlighting Areola’s save percentage in the Premier League, expressing disappointment over the club’s relegation.

“Very sad day for the fans. Very frustrated for the family. But always proud of you no matter what,” she added.

She further blamed Nuno for her husband’s absence from France’s World Cup squad, sharing highlights from his five international appearances alongside the caption: “And NO World Cup this year, thank you Nuno.”

Scott Parker Poised to Take Over at West Ham

Meanwhile, former West Ham midfielder Scott Parker is expected to replace Nuno as the club’s next head coach.

Parker has been without a managerial position since leaving Burnley shortly after the club’s relegation from the Premier League was confirmed last season.

The 45-year-old previously guided Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley to promotion to the top flight.

He also has a history with West Ham, having made 129 appearances for the club between 2007 and 2012.

During that period, he won the club’s Player of the Year award three times.

Parker is understood to be in line to take charge ahead of Wednesday’s Championship fixture against Cardiff City, provided an agreement is reached in time.

Former West Ham captain Mark Noble, who previously played alongside Parker, could also join his coaching staff.

West Ham Confirm Nuno’s Immediate Departure

West Ham announced Nuno’s dismissal in a statement released on Tuesday morning.

“West Ham United can confirm that men’s first-team Head Coach Nuno Espirito Santo has left his position with immediate effect,” the club said.

The statement explained that the decision followed a review of the team’s performances and results since the beginning of the Championship campaign.

“Following a thorough review of the start to the EFL Championship season, the Board of Directors believe that a change is necessary at this time in order to ensure that the club’s objectives and expectations remain on track.”

Assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa also left their positions.

The club thanked all three members of the departing coaching team for their work and commitment, adding that the recruitment process for a new head coach was already underway.

West Ham initially announced that Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville would oversee the team temporarily ahead of the trip to Cardiff.

However, Parker could take charge of the fixture if his appointment is completed in time.

Nuno’s Appointment Failed to Deliver Expected Promotion Challenge

Nuno’s departure comes after West Ham struggled to meet expectations in their first season back in the Championship following relegation from the Premier League.

The Portuguese manager, 52, signed a three-year contract in September 2025 after previously managing Tottenham, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest.

Although many expected him to leave following West Ham’s relegation, club co-owner David Sullivan had reportedly wanted to part ways with him during the summer.

However, Daniel Kretinsky, who has since become the club’s largest shareholder, backed Nuno to lead the promotion campaign.

West Ham subsequently released a statement outlining their plans for the season, describing the manager as “highly motivated” for the challenge.

The club retained several important players despite selling Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville during the summer.

Jarrod Bowen, Tomas Soucek, Taty Castellanos and Konstantinos Mavropanos were among those who remained.

West Ham also strengthened their squad with several additions, including Arne Engels from Celtic in a Championship-record transfer worth £22million.

Defeats to Southampton and West Brom Seal Nuno’s Fate

Despite recording 6-0 victories against Wrexham and Lincoln City, Nuno struggled to establish consistency in the team’s performances.

West Ham had managed just six victories from their opening 13 Championship matches, leaving them eighth in the table despite entering the campaign among the promotion favourites.

Consecutive defeats against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion ultimately preceded his dismissal.

The 3-1 home defeat to West Brom on Saturday proved particularly damaging, with supporters at the London Stadium directing chants of “sacked in the morning” towards the manager during and after the match.

Speaking after the defeat, Nuno acknowledged the frustration among supporters and insisted that improved results were the only way to restore their confidence.

“Every day there is pressure,” he said.

“I’m disappointed because we wanted to improve things. We want to win matches.”

Addressing the supporters’ reaction, he added: “This is the reality. You can only change this if we win games.

That’s the solution: getting better results. We have to go back to good performances.”

He also identified several matches in which West Ham had dropped points, including their opening fixture against Burnley and home defeats to Charlton, Southampton and West Brom.

“When we do that, our fans are going to stick with us. They’re going to support us,” he said.

Nuno Leaves West Ham With 19 Wins From 53 Matches

Nuno’s dismissal follows a difficult period for West Ham, despite an improvement towards the end of last season and an eight-match unbeaten run earlier in the current campaign.

His final defeat against West Brom was particularly notable given his previous association with Wolverhampton Wanderers, one of the club’s major rivals.

He leaves the London Stadium with a record of 19 victories, 19 defeats and 15 draws from 53 matches in charge.

West Ham currently sit eighth in the Championship, six points behind league leaders Middlesbrough.

Following Wednesday’s meeting with Cardiff City, the Hammers are scheduled to travel to Blackburn before the two-week international break.
