When Khama Billiat decided to come out of international retirement, it sparked renewed hope and calls from fans for another football star to return to the fold.
After stepping away from the Zimbabwe National Team over three years ago, Billiat rejoined the squad late last month.
His performance in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Kenya and Cameroon showed promise, although the team struggled to score in both matches.
The Team’s New Dynamics
At 34 years old, Billiat’s return has been a bright spot as Zimbabwe retools their squad under German coach Michael Nees.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns player displayed moments of brilliance, but the Warriors are still searching for that crucial spark.
The team’s two goalless draws in Group J left fans hopeful but yearning for more offensive firepower.
Fans Urge Musona to Return
As the Warriors rebuild, there’s a growing call for Knowledge Musona to make a comeback.
Zimbabwean football supporters are rallying on social media, urging Musona to follow Billiat’s lead.
Owen Magunje took to Facebook with a heartfelt plea: “Knowledge Musona, please, bro, we are begging you as a nation, just one more time.
We believe you still have a lot to offer. We respect your decision, but we hope you’ll consider giving us another chance with The Warriors.”
John Kalivana chimed in, drawing a comparison to global stars: “If Messi and Ronaldo are still playing, why not Musona? Convince him to come out of retirement; he’s still capable.”
Washington Zhakata echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the team’s need for inspiration: “We’ve been struggling for goals and have many young players who need guidance.
We believe Musona, our former captain, could provide that. We hope he’ll reconsider and help us through the current AFCON qualification campaign.”
Musona’s Legacy
Musona retired from international football in May 2022, having made a significant impact since his debut at just 19.
Known for his remarkable performances, including a notable friendly against Brazil, Musona retired as the team’s captain with 51 caps and 24 goals.
His nickname, ‘The Smiling Assassin,’ reflects his ability to shine during challenging times for the Warriors.
A Historic Duo
Musona and Billiat once formed a formidable partnership.
Their contributions were instrumental during Zimbabwe’s most successful era, including three consecutive AFCON appearances from 2017 to 2021.
Musona’s club career has also seen him play for notable teams such as Kaizer Chiefs, 1899 Hoffenheim, and Anderlecht.
Currently with Al Okhdood Club in Saudi Arabia, Musona has previously played for Al Tai and Al Riyadh.
With Zimbabwe facing a crucial period, fans are hopeful that Musona will heed their call and return to bolster the team’s chances in the ongoing AFCON qualifiers.
