A long-running family disagreement over the ownership of a childhood home ended in catastrophe after a Lancashire man deliberately set fire to the property, triggering a massive explosion that destroyed the bungalow and endangered nearby residents.
Darren Davies, 55, has now been sentenced to four years and four months in prison after admitting arson while being reckless as to whether lives could be be endangered.
The explosion demolished almost the entire £260,000 four-bedroom bungalow, leaving only a single wall standing and forcing emergency services to declare a major incident.
Police Footage Captured Immediate Admission
Body-worn camera footage presented during proceedings at Preston Crown Court showed Davies standing calmly outside the burning property moments after the explosion.
When an officer confirmed whether the bungalow belonged to him, Davies acknowledged ownership before confessing to causing the blast.
He reportedly told officers that it had not been a gas leak and said he deserved to be imprisoned.
He also admitted that he had intended to take his own life, repeating the same explanation to paramedics who arrived at the chaotic scene as firefighters and police worked to secure the area.
Fire Investigation Revealed Deliberate Planning
Investigators determined that Davies had poured petrol inside the attic and a bedroom before placing multiple gas cylinders throughout the house.
A lit candle was used to ignite combustible materials, rapidly accelerating the fire.
Although investigators could not identify the precise ignition point because of the extensive damage, forensic findings concluded that the blaze had been deliberately started using an open flame and an accelerant.
The resulting explosion scattered glass and debris across the surrounding road and posed a serious threat to neighbouring homes.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze before it spread further, while residents living nearby were evacuated as a precaution.
Brother Rejected Claims of Secret Will
The court heard that the bungalow had originally been inherited jointly by Darren Davies and his brother, Craig, following their father’s death.
According to a victim impact statement, Craig explained that discussions had taken place about eventually selling the property so both brothers could move on independently.
However, he said Darren later became convinced that their father had secretly signed another will granting sole ownership of the house to him.
Craig described the allegation as entirely unfounded, stating that his brother repeatedly accused him of participating in a conspiracy to deprive him of the property.
Witnesses Heard Emotional Confession
A motorist passing along Carr Lane witnessed the aftermath of the explosion and saw Davies emerge from the destroyed bungalow with only minor injuries.
The witness told the court that Davies claimed his family wanted the house and declared that if he could not have it, nobody else would.
At the time of the incident, Craig Davies was at work.
He only learned of the disaster after receiving a message from a friend asking him to make an urgent phone call, during which he was informed that the family home had been completely destroyed.
Lifelong Memories Lost in Minutes
Prosecutors said the explosion wiped out virtually everything inside the property, including treasured family possessions accumulated over decades.
The Crown Prosecution Service noted that Craig was left with only the belongings he had taken to work that day, while keepsakes inherited from their parents were permanently lost.
Other relatives also lost valuable sentimental items that could never be replaced.
The destruction forced Craig to depend on community support while rebuilding his life.
Investigators Highlight Serious Public Risk
Detective Constable Dave Pinnington praised the emergency responders who attended what he described as an extremely hazardous scene.
He said Davies’ actions not only destroyed his own home but also exposed firefighters, police officers and members of the public to significant danger.
Officers arriving at the scene worked under dangerous conditions to evacuate residents and determine the cause of the explosion.
Court Imposes Prison Sentence
Davies, formerly of Carr Lane in Hambleton, pleaded guilty to arson while being reckless as to whether life would be endangered during an earlier hearing before returning to Preston Crown Court for sentencing.
The court imposed a prison term of four years and four months, concluding a case in which prosecutors argued that an inheritance dispute escalated into an act that could easily have claimed multiple lives.
Lasting Consequences for the Family
While the prison sentence brings the criminal case to a close, the emotional and financial consequences continue for the Davies family.
The destroyed bungalow cannot be restored, and irreplaceable family heirlooms and memories have been lost forever.
