The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it has killed Anas Mahmoud Ahmed Hamdan, describing him as a Hamas company commander linked to the militant group’s Khan Yunis Brigade.
According to the Israeli military, Hamdan played a leading role in Hamas’ propaganda operations within the brigade.
Israeli officials also alleged that Hamdan was directly involved in holding Israeli hostages during their captivity in Gaza.
The IDF said he participated in documenting hostages during release ceremonies conducted by Hamas and claimed he had previously been involved in the captivity of Israeli civilian Avera Mengistu before the current conflict began.
Second Hamas Commander Reportedly Eliminated
In a separate announcement, the Israeli military said it also killed Nihad Riyad Abd al-Rahim Arouq, whom it identified as a Hamas platoon commander.
The IDF alleged that Arouq crossed into Israel during the October 7, 2023, attacks and remained active throughout the subsequent conflict.
Israeli authorities said he was responsible for training Hamas fighters and had continued working to organize attacks targeting Israeli soldiers and civilians in recent months.
Israel Continues Campaign Against Hamas Leadership
The reported killings come as Israel continues its military campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, focusing on commanders and operatives it says are involved in combat operations, hostage-related activities, and the planning of attacks against Israel.
Israeli officials have repeatedly stated that dismantling Hamas’ military infrastructure and targeting key leaders remain central objectives of the ongoing operation.
Hostage Issue Remains a Central Focus
The IDF’s statement placed particular emphasis on Hamdan’s alleged role in the captivity of Israeli hostages, an issue that continues to dominate efforts to secure the release of those still held in Gaza.
Israel has consistently accused Hamas of using hostages for propaganda purposes, including filming and publicizing release ceremonies. Hamas has previously maintained that hostage-related actions were conducted as part of negotiated prisoner exchange agreements.
Conflict Continues Amid Regional Tensions
The latest announcement reflects Israel’s continued efforts to target senior Hamas figures as fighting persists.
While the Israeli military has presented the operation as part of its broader campaign against the group’s leadership, Hamas had not immediately commented on the reported deaths at the time of the announcement.
The conflict, which began following the October 7, 2023, attacks, continues to fuel military operations, hostage negotiations, and heightened tensions across the region.
