A devastating overnight fire has left a family shattered after four-month-old twin boys lost their lives when flames engulfed their home in the Hashtag informal settlement in Ikageng, near Potchefstroom.

The heartbreaking incident occurred late on Monday night, reducing the family’s shack to ashes before emergency responders could save the children.

Emergency Services Responded to Late-Night Blaze

According to North West police, officers were called to the scene shortly before midnight following reports of a shack on fire.

When they arrived, the structure had already been completely destroyed by the flames.

Firefighters from the JB Marks Fire Brigade later managed to extinguish the blaze, but the damage had already been done.

Parents Injured While Trying to Escape

The twins’ parents sustained burn injuries during the incident.

Emergency medical personnel treated both victims at the scene before transporting them to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

Their current condition has not yet been disclosed.

Infants Found After Fire Was Brought Under Control

As investigators processed the remains of the destroyed shack, they made the tragic discovery of the charred bodies of the four-month-old boys.

The deaths have left the local community mourning another fatal fire in an informal settlement, where densely packed homes and limited fire protection often increase the risk of disaster.

Police Launch Investigation Into Cause of Fire

Authorities have opened an inquest to establish exactly what sparked the blaze.

Investigators will examine the scene and gather evidence as they work to determine how the fire started.

Police have not yet confirmed whether any heating equipment, electrical fault or open flame may have contributed to the incident.

Winter Fire Risks Prompt Fresh Safety Warning

Following the tragedy, police reminded residents to be especially cautious during the winter months, when the use of candles, paraffin stoves and heaters increases significantly.

Officials urged households never to leave candles, paraffin stoves or other open flames unattended and advised people to switch off heaters before leaving home or going to sleep.

They also stressed the importance of keeping heating equipment away from flammable materials.

Residents Encouraged to Take Preventive Measures

Police further advised communities to avoid overloading electrical outlets and to regularly check that paraffin stoves and heaters are in safe working condition.

Parents were also encouraged to keep matches and lighters out of children’s reach and to develop emergency evacuation plans so families can react quickly if a fire breaks out.

Carbon Monoxide Dangers Highlighted

Authorities also warned residents against using charcoal, generators or outdoor braziers inside enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.

Such practices can lead to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and smoke inhalation, creating another serious risk during the colder months as families seek ways to keep warm.
