A family group is alleged to have left a Turkish restaurant in Hertfordshire without paying a bill of nearly £160 after what staff believe was a carefully coordinated exit.

The incident took place at Turkish Kitchen in Hatfield, where five adults and four children had enjoyed a meal before gradually leaving the premises in separate groups.

According to restaurant management, the staggered departures culminated with the final diner calmly walking out and joining the rest of the party in a white van waiting outside.

The unpaid bill totalled £159.60.

Restaurant Says Customers Promised Payment Before Departing

General manager Klaus Ademi said nothing about the group’s behaviour initially raised suspicion.

He explained that they ordered a typical selection of food and drinks rather than placing unusually large orders or behaving disruptively.

According to Mr. Ademi, members of the group repeatedly reassured staff that they would pay “in a minute” when asked about settling the bill.

Instead, individuals gradually left the restaurant until only one customer remained seated.

That final diner later exited the restaurant, with staff only realising moments later that no payment had been made.

Management Believes Exit Was Planned

After reviewing CCTV footage, the restaurant concluded that the departures appeared to have been deliberate rather than accidental.

Mr. Ademi described the white van parked directly outside the restaurant as resembling a waiting getaway vehicle.

He said staff immediately checked whether another member of the group had already settled the bill, only to discover that the entire party had left without paying.

The manager said the restaurant has not experienced a similar incident before and described the financial loss as particularly difficult at a time when independent hospitality businesses are facing mounting economic pressures.

Meal Included Sharing Platter, Lamb Ribs and Drinks

Restaurant management said the group ordered a range of items, including a sharing platter, lamb ribs and several beverages.

The order reportedly included three beers, a strawberry daiquiri, a Coke Zero and a lemonade, bringing the total bill to £159.60.

Mr. Ademi, who has worked at the family-run business for seven years, said he learned about the incident after staff showed him the recorded surveillance footage once his shift had ended.

Financial and Emotional Impact on Staff

The restaurant says the consequences extend beyond the unpaid bill itself.

Mr. Ademi noted that rising food prices, wages and energy costs have made operating an independent restaurant increasingly challenging.

He added that incidents of customers leaving without paying also affect staff morale, especially after employees spend the evening providing attentive service.

He described feeling shocked, angry and disappointed after watching the CCTV footage.

Restaurant Appeals for Payment and Warns Other Businesses

Following the incident, Turkish Kitchen shared details on Facebook, asking those involved to contact the restaurant and pay the outstanding balance.

In its statement, the restaurant said it believes the departure was not an innocent mistake but an intentional act.

Management confirmed that CCTV footage has been preserved and that the matter will be reported to police.

The business also urged other local restaurants, cafés and hospitality venues to remain alert, stressing that it was encouraging vigilance rather than asking anyone to draw conclusions about the individuals involved.

The statement thanked loyal customers for their continued support, adding that honesty from patrons plays a vital role in helping independent businesses remain open during difficult trading conditions.

Similar Incidents Reported Across the UK

The Hatfield incident comes amid a series of reported dine-and-dash cases affecting hospitality businesses around the country.

Earlier this month, staff at the Custom House in Penarth, Wales, released surveillance footage after a couple allegedly left without paying a £115 bill.

In another case, Aegean Breeze Seafood and Steak House in Worcester reported losing £396 after a group allegedly departed without settling their bill following complaints about the taste of lobster served as part of a seafood platter.

Restaurant owners continue to warn that repeated incidents of unpaid bills place additional strain on independent businesses already coping with rising operating costs and tighter profit margins.
