On Monday, an organization of devoted Taylor Swift fans announced they had raised over $40,000 (R710,000) for Kamala Harris’s campaign, all thanks to a tweet from Donald Trump.
The former president took to Truth Social on Sunday morning, declaring, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”
This outburst provided a golden opportunity for the “Swifties for Kamala” group to rally support and fundraise for Harris, Trump’s Democratic rival.
Seizing the Moment
Carly Long, a spokesperson for the group, described their reaction to Trump’s post: “As soon as we saw the tweet, we recognized it as a prime opportunity.
Our team jumped into action with ideas for lyric-themed responses and strategies to encourage donations and volunteer work.”
Long explained that they use memes to grab people’s attention and then channel that energy into meaningful action.
“Swifties know that haters gonna hate, but we also know we can do more than just shake, shake, shake,” she added.
Fundraising Success and Star Power
While the Swifties for Kamala organization isn’t officially linked to Taylor Swift herself, they’ve been remarkably successful in their fundraising efforts.
In less than two months, they’ve raised over $207,000.
Their initial fundraising call, which drew 27,000 viewers, featured appearances from notable figures like Carole King and Senators Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Ed Markey.
Recently, Taylor Swift publicly endorsed Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, praising Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and expressing her support after the Harris-Trump debate.
Swift’s endorsement has further bolstered the group’s efforts.
Looking Ahead
The Swifties for Kamala group plans to continue their outreach, focusing on swing states and leveraging remaining dates of Swift’s blockbuster Eras Tour, which resumes in Miami on October 18.
Co-founder Irene Kim highlighted the group’s impact: “We’re showing how powerful Swifties can be.
We’re using our fandom culture to make voting and politics more accessible.”
Stay tuned for more updates as this unique intersection of fandom and politics continues to evolve.
