The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is set to open its online funding applications for the 2025 academic year on Friday, 20 September.
This follows a brief delay in the process, which was originally slated to start on Monday after a previous postponement.
Reason for the Delay
In a media briefing held in Pretoria, Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane and NSFAS administrator Freeman Nomvalo shed light on why the launch was pushed back.
Nkabane explained that the delay was due to important consultations with student organizations over the weekend.
“We had a presentation and discussed crucial feedback from stakeholders,” Nkabane said.
“Based on these discussions, I’m confident that NSFAS is now ready to begin the online application process this Friday.”
She also addressed concerns from students about the delay, emphasizing that the extra time was used to test the system thoroughly.
“We needed to run a dry run of the system with stakeholders to ensure everything was in order,” she added.
Enhancements to the Application System
The upcoming application launch promises several improvements designed to enhance the user experience.
These upgrades are part of ongoing efforts to fix issues that have plagued the application process in the past, such as system crashes and delays in fund disbursement.
NSFAS has faced criticism for inefficiencies, with many students frustrated by delayed payments and poor communication.
However, the scheme remains a vital support system for those seeking financial aid for higher education.
Governance Challenges Amidst Maladministration Claims
The 2025 application process begins at a challenging time for NSFAS, which is currently operating without a board.
The previous board was dissolved earlier this year due to allegations of maladministration and financial mismanagement.
Despite these governance issues, NSFAS officials have assured the public that the scheme is prepared to handle the upcoming application cycle.
With the 2025 academic year approaching, all eyes are on NSFAS as it works to deliver improved systems and meet the high expectations of students.
